Hello,

A very big newbie to GB-PVR and streaming NAS etc.

This is my current setup:

PC with HDMI (inc Audio) Output
This PC HDMI plugs into my Plasma TV

I would like to use GB-PVR when viewing the PC through the TV.

I am planning on buying a NAS to store all my videos and music on.
Eventually I may get a digital media player so I assume the NAS need to be DLNA Compatible UPnP AV.

How do I setup GB-PVR with a DLNA NAS. Do I just add the directory where the files are stored or is there a clever way of doing this as the NAS is streaming the files etc.

Thank you for the help

From GB-PVR's perspective it'll just see it as a directory, and you dont need to do anything special. I'd recommend using UNC paths instead of mapped drives though when you set your recording directory.

I wont be recording to the drive only playing from.

What is different from NAS drives with with DLNA Compatible UPnP AV and without it.

Does it make any difference when streaming files and music? e.g. itunes?

There is no difference from GB-PVR's perspective. Its just a directory with files in it. GB-PVR doesnt know or care that its also a UPnP server.

From GB-PVR's perspective, there is no point to the UPnP server, but obviously there is other hardware or software that might use these features of your NAS server though.

if you get a digital media player [like a PCH] it will be able to use your nas directly with no pc on, and gbpvr wouldn't have anything to do with this...the device's own browsing interface would be used..

however if you get a real PCH you also can have gbpvr interface on it because it was programmed specifically for this device...other non-'NMT' devices won't be able to do this...
and obviously having pvrx2 interface would require a pc server..

you can also use the NAS with gbpvr by using my SimpleArchiver to move shows to the NAS for extra storage..Smile

I'd recommend reading the reviews on Newegg.com before you order the Netgear ReadyNAS. The early ones were notorious for overheating. I don't know if they have improved or not, but the Newegg site doesn't seem to censor bad product reviews, so you'll likely find good info there.

On a clear disk, you can seek forever...
