Sub,

While I'm excited about the future of N-PVR, I'm finding it's just too incomplete for me to actually use just yet.

I've been practically holding my breath for what I thought would be a new release of GB-PVR that might resolve some of the troubles I've been having (even if by accident). The worst issue I have is that the recording service sometimes just quits working at the end of a recording, and never does anything else until I reboot the PC. N-PVR looks like an amazing start, but it doesn't really help me at all today.

Like many others I'm going to be using GB-PVR for awhile yet until N-PVR matures. I'm left wondering then if you have any final build of GB-PVR you might release in hopes that it might help?

Thanks.

Sorry, but no, thats it. There will be no more GB-PVR releases or patches.

Previously I was intending some patches for a short period of time, but a few months ago I rebuilt my machine, and changed versions of the compiler etc, so I'm no longer in a position where I could make patches.

The best bet is to make sure you make it clear what functionality you see as lacking in N-PVR, so that I can hopefully get it up to speed sooner rather than later.

your problem is most likely related to windows, i bet a clean install of win would fix it...
[backup your gb dir and install gb in fresh windows and copy old dir over new one.stop services first]
windows goes nuts so often by itself, i keep a image of c: drive just in case it decides to break itself..
saves me every time..Smile
[noone else seems to have this problem, and services are usually rock solid]

ok, thanks sub. It was mostly a "doesn't hurt to ask" sort of thing. I'm fiddling with NPVR now, the basic setup really is slick. I'll post my issues/wishlist as I come to them in the NPVR support forum. Or do you want missing features/wishlist for NPVR in the Wishlist forum?

Someone was going ask eventually Smile

You guys have the latest GB-PVR code I made, so there was no later build to supply.

I'm happy with either. I guess the NPVR support forum for now, until we're out of beta.

Thanks pBS, but the problem has followed me across a complete re-install of Windows or two, and across at least two versions of Windows if not 3 (at least Windows 7RC and Windows 7RTM, and it may go back to Windows XP, I'm not sure). It's also survived a tuner change (a KWorld USB tuner died, and was replaced with the USB Hauppauge in my sig). In the thread(s) about this, we have identified others to whom this happens periodically. The recording service just dies while ending a recording. It's undoubtedly something to do with a tuner or it's driver doing something GB-PVR doesn't handle right and it just hangs waiting forever for something else to happen.

If sub couldn't reproduce the problem (he couldn't), my hope had been that a new version of the recording service might be more robust in that area or add some more logging to see where and/or why the recording service was dying. Or, the most magical of all fixes, the accidental fix courtesy of some other change that also happens to fix my problem.

However, that ship has sailed as they say. On to the future...

This wouldn't solve your problem, but couldn't you write a batch file that could run once a minute (via task scheduler) that does some sort of "if recording service not running, then (re)start it" task?

Unfortunately it doesn't help to restart the recording service, because the service becomes completely unresponsive. It will actually launch a new instance of the service, with the old instance still running (I know, that shouldn't be possible). The old instance still has at least one tuner locked up, and nothing really works right after that. Nothing seems to be able to kill the hung recording service. I sent sub a process dump of the recording service in that state awhile back, I don't know if it lead him to anything... for all I know it drove him straight to NPVR Big Grin

By the way, if anyone's curiosity is aroused, here my original thread on this problem: http://forums.gbpvr.com//showthread.php?...ed-all-day

When the problem first occurred I was definitely on XP and using a KWorld 330U tuner with the HVR-1250 I have now. Since then I've gone to Win7RC and finally Win7RTM, and have replaced the KWorld USB tuner with an HVR850 (sometime during the Win7RC period). I've also reversed the tuner order a few times in the last year, and it doesn't seem to make any obvious difference. It does seem that initially restarting the recording service did work, or at least I thought it did, but more recently it hasn't. For the past few months as soon as I see the stuck tuner I just reboot regardless.

Ohh no what about the EPG problem that you would solve in the next release? (the one where id's didn't match up) Is there anyway to mess around the the database manually correcting the problem?
