I probably should have mentioned this in the long UI design wishlist thread a couple of months ago, but I didn't think about it until now....

Why do recordings and video library get a completely separate menu item? Can't they be integrated together? What is so fundamentally different about a TV show or movie that's been recorded locally vs. a TV show or movie that came from somewhere else that they need such disparate treatment? Why can't a movie for the kids I just bought and ripped show up in What's New? It's new isn't it?

(yes, I know the technical difference is that recordings are in the database while video library items are just files... but why does the user have to be bothered with that?)

Complete integration may be a tall order straight off, but at the very least it should be simple enough to have the defined Video Library paths show up as additional menu pages in Recordings (ie, flip between What's New, Ready, Video Library path 1, Video Library path 2, Pending, Conflicts, etc.). That keeps the whole 'playing of files containing video' function in one place.

While I'm ranting, I've also never really liked the What's New list. I'd prefer just one list of recordings that's sorted by recording date, and grouped by program as well (ie, essentially the Ready list sorted by date rather than alpha). Therefore the top of the Recordings list is What's New by definition, but you don't have to go to a whole different list to see what isn't quite as new, or to see what other episodes you may have missed before the new one that just recorded. You should be able to push a button and change the sort order to alpha as well.

For a usage example of the last bit: I record Who Wants to be a Millionaire so I can laugh at the idiot who doesn't know some basic bit of science or tech knowledge for the $2000 question. I like to watch them in order. So I sit down and see a new Millionaire in the What's new list... but is it the only one or are there some others recorded? Some days I have 20+ shows recorded, so to scroll back through the What's New list looking for more of one show can be a lot of shows to look through. So I switch to the ready list, page all way down to W and watch whatever Millionaires are there. Now I'm done with those, what else is new? I'm in the wrong list, go back to What's New, see some other daily show is new, but again I like to watch them in order, so it's back to Ready, find that show, and so on.... Why can't it all be in one list?

Sorry, that was a wordy rant... it's late, I'm tired, and had a couple shots of this weird homemade blueberry vodka a business associate gave me...

I wouldn't say I was a fan of the idea of having my Recordings & Video items combined, mainly because I have my USB archive/keep drive configured in Videos & not for any recordings as it takes quite a while to wake up, this means when I enter the Videos menu there is quite a big delay waiting for it to wake up before I can do anything, I certainly don't want that delay when entering the Recordings screen.

You can get imported videos in recordings with vidImport - it won't auto import with NPVR (you will have to manually point to the created xml file) yet but I will get to that sometime in the near future.

And if you have AutoRemoveMissingRecordings true all your videos will disappare when you unplug the usb-storage. But he has a point in sorting recordings by date, I'v missed that too.

Quote:For me the biggest "gap" is that Revens My Videos doesn't seem likely to make it into production. I would really like to see an all-in-one, all-singing, all-dancing Video Manager that basically enables me to do whatever I could ever conceivable want to do with a recording, all from one plugin. I would like to :-

Browse movies, whether they are recent recordings, iplayer plugin downloads, torrent plugin downloads or dvd rips without worrying about where they are located. (i.e. a videos database).

(Like soccerdad and others suggested), view my recordings and videos by category/genre. IIRC, a couple of years ago I suggested having the genre tab available to select when a recording is scheduled and being able to filter on this field (e.g. kids. movies)

I would definitely prefer to keep the recordings library separate from the video library. Combining them would seriously lower WAF (and my own acceptance factor). I also happen to like the "What's new screen". You can adjust how many days it shows by changing <WhatsNewDays> in config.xml. Set it to "365" and it will show all recordings for the past year (thereby giving you your "sorted by recording time" screen).

If we could sort by different criteria as well at a click of a button it would then be a heaps better, more so if you could highlight a show & then select sort by name & it stayed on the show you selected but showed all the other recordings for that show.

The problem with just setting the What's New list to a longer time period is that the recordings still aren't grouped, it really doesn't help anything.

Ultimately I guess what I'm after is some sort options for the Ready list, and perhaps even have it not show the What's New list if desired.

Agreed. I just tried to set it to 730 days and discovered that it was not grouped, and that means A LOT of browsing.
