I understand that Directx 9 is required for NPVR, but I am having trouble installing the right thing in Windows 7 64 Home Premium.

dxdiag shows I have Directx 11.

I have tried the Microsoft website and downloaded the install file that says Directx 9.0c upgrade (file name directx_Jun2010_redist.exe) to do this. However, this doesn't appear to install the proper files to support version 9.

I have tried searching for direct x 9 redistributable, but haven't found anything different.

My install of NPVR is not very functional without this. Can anyone point me to a file or procedure that installs Direct x 9 for Windows 7?

The logfile reports:

I show Directx11 as well but think it's backwards compatible. I've not installed anything else to allow it to run with NPVR but have you tried what sub shows in this message?

The DirectX SDK updater sub posted in the announcement thread (linked by pcostanza) is correct for Windows 7, and any version of Windows for that matter.

Hmmm . . . Well, the log file shows a Directx problem, so I assumed this was the difficulty. I just installed it to check out the interface, this machine does not have my capture card. I then pointed to a ripped dvd, and some .avi files, both of which show fine in Windows, and in GBPVR running on and XP box.

In NPVR, the dvd shows video, but audio is show as "disabled" on the right click menu and there is no sound. I have tried various configuration changes in the decoders section of the settings menu, but can't get anything other than "disabled" and can't get any audio.

For the avi files, I have the opposite problem. There is sound, but no video. Again, I tried various settings to no avail.

All I did was run the NPVR installer, and then be sure my Directx was the latest and greatest.

So, no joy for me.

I had the same error. Suggest you to try downloading the 'Web Installer' for DirectX 9.0c instead. This took care of the DirectX 9.0c install error for me. DirectX 9.0c will working independently of DirectX 11, so it will work fine even if DirectX 11 exists on the same system.

Well, I had already done that. But I went to the specific link you suggested and did it again. It installs nothing because it says everything is up to date and fine.

Still have the same problems in NPVR--no audio on dvd playing, and no video on .avi playing.

I then reinstalled NPVR, but had exactly the same result.

Still no joy.

You get further than me with DVD playing! I just get an exception and the whole thing hangs until I kill it... I was going to try the above dx when I got home but I'm not holding much hope now... I'm on win7 pro x64 with Sub's dx link installed and I'm fairly sure it is already as up to date as it can be....

When it comes to .avi files NPVR takes no part in playback of these. It just askes windows Directshow to play them. You might get a more meaningful reason by downloading and running GraphEdit and selecting the 'render media file' menu option and selecting your .avi file. This is effectively what NPVR does. It'll hopefully tell you if there is a decoder is missing on your machine.

One reason this can happen is if you're using ffdshow for decoders, but it doesnt have "NextPVR.exe" on the whitelist of applications in ffdshow settings.

If someone posts their logs from a failed DVD playback, I'll take a look.

I'll post the dvd fail log file this evening after I get home.

As for the .avi, I'm not sure what windows Directshow is. Can someone help me with that? How do I use it outside of NPVR to play the .avi files? All I know right now is that if I double-click the .avi files from explorer, they play properly, but in NPVR they don't. Sorry, I know that is not much help.

I have looked at GraphEdit a bit when I was futzing with my GBPVR implementation, and it is close to beyond my comprehension. When I have some time I may look into this.

You dont really need to much about it, other than being aware that "directshow" is the name for the components in Windows used for playing media files.

I'd try graphedit. You dont need to know any technical stuff, just run it and choose the 'render media file' menu option, then select the .avi file. It'll most likely give an error message. If not, you should be able hit the 'play' button and watch your video.
