Dear all,

please may I first make this comment, which is not to drift off topic for this thread Big Grin

I always knew from the release of 'N-PVR' that anyone taking up the idea for creating a wiki for it would be up for some question and answers sessions, and I am! But be gentle..... unless you are going to help create a new wiki from scratch, in which case just say 'that's my job' 'f***' off and quite honestly I might!

Please do not EVEN bother responding unless you've spent your time looking at the other threads in documentation etc about a new wiki.... (and I do know that I'm a bit rubbish myself for looking through threads sometimes, sorry Martin!)
  • I would suggest keeping with pmwiki as the wiki engine, but upgrading it to the latest engine, and perhaps with a few more recipes to enhance it even better?
  • I would suggest that at least 4 of us (no more than 6) were enabled as admin to grant wiki publication rights to those that wished to publish to the wiki. (Should anyone get bored of this job they could pass on the mantle to those they thought could carry this on) And please read this correctly, this is admin, we used to ask blader for publication access anyway.
  • The list of 'Link Navs' would be locked by admin and only decided by admin with consultation to enhance the wiki nav experience, in the past the fact that navigation links could be added by anyone I think helped to make the wiki a little more confusing than it should have been.

This is just the start of my enquiry, should I hit a brick wall, just reply, 'Brick Wall'!

My suggestion is to get this running on my local web dev server and when the time is right upload to sub's server with whatever URL N-PVR wiki will end up with. So like the beta play with N-PVR, this is beta play with wiki........

Dear all,

so I guess my post may have been somewhat heavy handed, but that was the way I saw to drive a new wiki forward.

Can't wait to see how the new wiki is created, respect!

Cheers

One thing I have noticed over the years of using GB & reading the forums & using the wiki is there is a huge lack of people willing to actually "do" things on the wiki (but plenty that are willing to say/moan about it being out of date etc. etc.). What I think really "gets" me is it is the ideal place for non programmers to give something back to the project & therefore the whole community & especially for new'ish users to help other new users as it is really hard to be able to look back on the problems that you had as a new users after you have been using the program for a while.

I am surprised that "we" haven't got some sort of new wiki underway by now as there is plenty of stuff that needs to be documented & already a number of NPVR skins & plugins available without a real home for them where they can be found.

Are the expectations that is would be a new URL and site? If so, I think it is primarily because it is not high on the priority list of the one person whom is able to set forth such a site. Nothing more, nothing less.

The whole "setup" in general is for people that are much smarter than I...Without question.

From what I have read originally the wiki was hosted off site & then later sub took over hosting it.

I have no idea what is the best way to do it but

may be a good start?

at last response !

I will have to quote here verbatim!

@ Jaggy so would you like to play with this?

Yes @ fatman-do,

this is NOT on someone else's list, after all we all know documentation is not someone else's priority but......... we can make 'N' PVR Wiki look good?

Cheers

Steeb

Huh? Play with what?

I will do my bit for the wiki just like I did for the GB-PVR wiki (that a lot of people wouldn't even realise I did as I just did it when I saw something that needed doing or I had some free time) but I don't have a huge amount of free time at the moment with the NPVR projects I am involved in right now.

Steeb,

I kind of get where you're coming from. You want to put together a posse and ride out and tackle this thing Smile. But from my, (albeit somewhat limited), experience that's not really how it works. It usually takes one person to grab the bull by the horns and start something, from there it often snowballs.

So here is what you've got. You've got me willing to help out where I can on aesthetics and maybe even code, to get things up and running. And this is what I think we need to get started:
  • Are you in the position to publicly host any temporary new wiki? You can obviously limit editing access to those that want to help out. But we will need something that's publicly viewable, to start the snow ball.

steeb Wrote:I would suggest keeping with pmwiki as the wiki engine, but upgrading it to the latest engine, and perhaps with a few more recipes to enhance it even better?
  • Given that things aren't really set in stone, I personally think we should concentrate on this element. Try and set-up a good base i.e basically modernize the wiki (add some new features) and give it a fresh look.

If you build it they will come
