I have tried installing WinTV in order to be able to use the arcsoft H.264 video decoder, which works fine until I reboot, then WinTV claims one of my tuners for its own exclusive use.

How can I take the Arcsoft codecs which must be on the WinTV installation CD, and install them on my system (XP) on their own?

The Leadtek Winfast application installs ArcSoft codecs in dir c:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\MPEG Engine\*.*
So, I copied this directory to different location (because, when you uninstall Winfast application, codec is removed as well). Then, all *.ax files should be registered again using
regsvr32 aacdecode.ax
regsvr32 aacencoder.ax
regsvr32 ac3encoderfilter.ax
etc.......
After all, ArcSoft codec is visible inside NPVR, however sometimes there is a codec problem when I start LiveTV.

Thanks for the pointers.
ASVid.ax seem so be the equivalent file for the H.246 decoder, WinTV puts it in C:/program files/WinTV/WinTV7/codecs/H.264/H264decoder.
Putting this file on the same machine as NPVR and running the regsvr32 makes the ArcSoft decoder show up in the options in the decoder settings on NPVR, but it doesn't actually work. When WinTV is installed on the machine, playback does work with this decoder.
When you say you sometimes have a problem, does that give any error message or anything in any log (where should I look?).

I think I have worked around this. I installed WinTV then stopped the only running WinTV process, then deleted all the WinTV stuff except the codecs directory. I can now reboot without WinTV grabbing a tuner, and use the Arcsoft H.246 decoder in NPVR.

The ax file is the main decoder but it depends on dlls to decode the various types of video. For H.264 you need ASH264Vid.dll and probably a couple of others. It's best to just copy all the dlls from the codec folder.

There is nothing special in the logs. Well, there is an error, but the same error occurs when LiveTV starts correctly:
2010-11-14 23:02:02.812 [ERROR][15] ConnectFilters:Failed(2)
and then, when LiveTV stops, there are 2 more messages:
2010-11-14 23:02:25.718 [ERROR][7] Live stream expired without renewal. (handle:160002)
......
2010-11-14 23:02:54.281 [DEBUG][13] Renew lease failed (0x160002)

So, it tells me nothing.
But, I observe that every first run of LiveTV after NPVR start is incorrect. Second run of LiveTV is OK.

The ArcSoft decoders use a license manager, and cant just be copied to the machine and registered. The easiest way to get it installed is to install WinTV7. If you dont want WinTV7 running in the background, you can set the 'Hauppauge TV Server' service to 'manual startup'.

I did try that too, but I still couldn't playback using it.

I also tried that, but somehow WinTV still grabbed the analogue tuner. Deleting all the executables stopped it doing it though.

It's for TMT 3 but it should get you going.
