With the huge number of satellite channels floating around - and more annoyingly, moving transponders, I find myself scanning fairly regularly and trying to spot moves as they happen.

However, here at least, there are vast numbers of channels that I have not the least interest in and would like to see the back of them permanently. Would it be possible to have a flag in the database that when set, would disable them from any view in setup so the wheat can be seen from the chaff.

We should be able to do something like that. I'll add it on the to-do list for a future build.

Would it be easier (for sub and users) to do it as a whitelist/blacklist option, using text files rather than tagging stuff in the database?

ie, you could let it scan, but only show results if they match the channel names in a given file (for those that know which channels they're after), or to ignore the channels in the file (for those that know which channels they loathe). Perhaps the ability to right-click "save results to ***.txt" in the scanning dialog would help to get things started too.

There's a downside to user-editable files in the sense they're prone to typos and other issues relating to file format etc. An example would be using XML files where a user puts an apostrophe in instead of using the correct ' escape sequence.

On the one hand, I do like things I can tweak easily but on the other, it makes sense for npvr (or any app) to maintain things through a controlled UI accessing 'backend' data.

What I'd like to see is something similar to gbpvr where all channels are retained after a scan and can be enabled/disabled. At the moment, the only way we can 'hide' channels is to literally delete them for a capture source. In the past I would simply hide channels I wasn't interested in - I might then see a trailer for something 'Starting Saturday at 7pm on Channel Blah'. I could then simply go to gbpvr Config and enable that channel without having to rescan all capture sources.

The ability to have something based in the DB which could mark channels as 'Permanently Ignore', 'Retain But Hide', 'Always Show' and have those 'flags' honoured on subsequent rescans would really help.

Cheers,
Brian

With a whitelist you wouldn't spot new channels that you may be interested in.
Blacklist would work, but I'd still prefer an initial, new scan to find everything and let the user kill off what will never be wanted
slapper on a sofa, chatlines, selling, religion and the like is mainly what I want rid of and there are quite a few of them.

As Brian said, I think the best place would be the DB.

Any support calls for "I can't tune in xxx" when it is disabled I will take the blame for Wink

Maybe the ability to import/export the settings from the DB then? I was just trying to think of something that would make it easier for new/repeat installs.

The idea itself is great; especially with all the tat channels we get in the UK.

Would it be possible on the Wiki to create lists you could download and import into NPVR for, say, Freesat. That way as well as only scanning the Freesat transponders, it only adds the Freesat channels and to the correct channel numbers?

I assume (without looking) that all the shite channels aren't on their own TPs that you can just drop out of the ini file? I guess there's bound to be something watchable on the same TP as some crap Smile I just stick the TP I know about at the top of the list and give it a scan to add anything new. of course that relies on someone telling me there's something new worth looking for though.

Or maybe a pointer on the wiki to something like shared google documents containing preselected groups like freesat?

I have been following this thread with ENOURMOUS interest since it began.

This has to be THE most frustrating thing about doing a rescan, to be landed with more channels that you don't want than the ones you do Big Grin

I did it today as part of my 2.1.4 update. Blimey there are a lot of crap channels out there

And I have to untick every one. Even with ctrl and shift keys to select multiple channels to 'untick as selected' the process is very laborious Wink

I leave it to the NextPVR more technical citizens as to what is the best way to how this could be handled, but shared user files would seem like a great approach. The wiki of course could have space for this, or off NextPVR webpages.

Whatever the approach may be. Black list, white list, to not have to get XXXBabes from Essex (etc, made that one up!) any more when I do a scan and appear as a selected channel would be brilliant!

My vote is PLEASE, YES...

cheers
