I’ve had the NPVR Recording Service crash a number of times since installing version 2.2.6. It has happened approximately once per week, but not on the same day each time.

The initial sign that something is wrong is that my PC hasn’t gone to sleep following late evening recordings. It’s still awake in the morning and the NPVR tray icon is red which would usually indicate a recording is still in progress. Further investigation shows a number of failed recordings.

This may be related to the problem reported by Grampz in http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...e-stopping however I didn’t want to hijack that thread in case this is an entirely different issue.

When I experienced another recording service crash last night I finally managed to gather together some diagnostics.

Windows Event logs show:
  • 3/10/2011 21:45:25 - .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.3623 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (6F4BC58E) (80131506)
  • 3/10/2011 21:45:28 - Faulting application NRecord.exe, version 1.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4e5bf19a, faulting module mscorwks.dll, version 2.0.50727.3623, time stamp 0x4d8c187e, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0002da41, process id 0x%9, application start time 0x%10.
  • 3/10/2011 21:51:41 - The NPVR Recording Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).
The final entries in the attached NRecord.log were:
Code:
2011-10-03 21:36:00.084    [DEBUG][7]    Stopping recording (4679). Past end time of recording.
2011-10-03 21:36:00.084    [INFO][7]    DigitalRecorder.StopStream() handle: C

There are several of us with this same problem.

2011-10-03 21:36:00.342 [DEBUG][14] Graph stopping... (async)
2011-10-03 21:36:08.112 [DEBUG][7] Async stop taking way too long

For me it most often happens at 02:06 at the end of the scan phase of EPG update but now seems to happen at other times as well. Until a fix is found the best workaround is in post #2 in the link below from ShiningDragon to automatically restart NRecord if it crashes.

http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...rd-running

It dosnt cure the problem but minimises the number of "Failed Recordings". According to the Windows logs it has happend 3 times in the last week on my server.

Thanks for the information.

My NPVR Recording Service crashed in a similar way again last night. That wasn't typical, being just 24 hours after the previous crash, I've normally managed to get about a week between crashes until now.

I've adopted the workaround in the linked thread of setting the service to restart if it fails - that should at least minimise the number of recordings that I lose completely.

I have the same problem, but for me it happens almost every day.

The NRecord.log-File ends with:

Code:
2011-10-05 02:28:19.077    [INFO][8]    DigitalRecorder.StopStream() handle: 6
2011-10-05 02:28:19.077    [INFO][8]    No more streams active. Stopping device.
2011-10-05 02:28:19.077    [DEBUG][8]    About to request async graph stop
2011-10-05 02:28:19.077    [DEBUG][17]    About to stop network provider
2011-10-05 02:28:19.277    [DEBUG][17]    Stopped network provider
2011-10-05 02:28:19.277    [DEBUG][17]    Graph stopping... (async)
2011-10-05 02:28:27.082    [DEBUG][8]    Async stop taking way too long
2011-10-05 02:28:27.082    [DEBUG][8]    Removing filter  MPEG-2 Sections and Tables
2011-10-05 02:28:27.082    [DEBUG][8]    Removing filter  BDA MPEG2 Transport Information Filter
2011-10-05 02:28:27.082    [DEBUG][8]    Removing filter  MPEG-2 Demultiplexer

About two minutes later there are some Messages in the windows Event log:

Sadly, there's no crash-mdmp-file of this crash.

I've checked my .net-Installations with sfc /scannow and with the .net-verifier-tool of http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive...99004.aspx. There are no errors.

How can we find a solution for this problem. Can I help somehow?

Here is the NRecord.log-file: [ATTACH=CONFIG]31919[/ATTACH]

buribu -The "Async stop taking way too long" problem is mentioned in several threads and more people now seem to have the problem. In another thread Sub needed the "Crash Dump" file and I think he now may have been sent two so hopefully we may get some progress. I see in your NRecord.log entry that the time is after 2am so is your crash mainly happening during EPG updated like mine. I have had two NRecord crashes in the last week and they are always preceeded by a .NET error.

I'm still not sure what causes this, and I've been unable to reproduce it here.

If you're not using the DVB EPG, you could try applying the attached patch, and adding <CollectEIT>false</CollectEIT> in the <General> section of config.xml, then run with it for a few days and let me know if the problem recurs.

I thought I'd give NextPVR another go (currently use GBPVR). However after a (what looks like) successfull channel scan for the device, i get a crash dump that mentions this same "Async stop taking way too long". attached is my crach dump and log.

Any help, gratefully received
Thanks

Try that patch and config.xml setting above.

Thanks Sub, that's sorted that bit for me - I can now scan for channels without a crash

did this patch actually fix something, or was it just supposed to add additional logging for debug?

edit: oh, nevermind, I see, it allows disabling the collection of EIT data. seems like EIT data has caused a number of issues
