I appreciate that this may be hard, but it would be nice if live TV could be synchronized between the server and one or more clients. We sometimes both watch the same channel in the same room (with only one set of speakers turned on) and it would be nice if the sound was in sync with the picture for both of us!

Cheers,
John

Attaching a second monitor/TV to your server would solve that problem much easier.

It must be a very big room. Like Brian, I can easily see the scenario in things that break NextPVR's license for personal use, but I struggle to find a home scenario. You could probably get something close (especially if you like linux) by creating a VLC-based multi-cast UDP DVB server, and set up (temporarily) your clients as servers and using the new IPTV function recording, but there will still be a/v sync issues because of the differences in the ways you PC's do buffering and decoding.

I don't know about that.... Our situation is similar as we have a "small" old cottage but it does have a semi-open plan living room layout, so when the Boss is watching something in the sitting room & I'm in the kitchen I can hear but not see it.

I live in an open concept house too and I can't imagine sharing speakers. I guess for this scenario, where you really want to share one speaker system, RedDwarf's idea or a video distribution system would work best.

I've asked for a similar feature before and some people seem to be very much opposed to the concept. I'd love such a system in my apartment where I have a server on the living room TV and a desktop in my study. It would be brilliant when I'm working on stuff that has me regularly walking between the two rooms.

I always thought it would be a fairly reasonable thing for a Plugin to do. I'd imagine it'd work as follows:

1) Server starts viewing Live TV.
2) Plugin on server pauses Live TV.
3) Plugin on client reads Live TV file from server and pauses.
4) Plugins communicate and go to specific point in Live TV file (say 5 seconds behind real-time) and remain paused.
5) Server Plugin sends start command to all clients (playback synchronised to a few milliseconds).

Just my thoughts. I can't code it as I don't have the skills but it seems possible.

However, in saying all of that it turns out there may be a solution using VLC.

Seeing as you can access VLC streams from NextPVR via the http://<localhost>:8866/livetv?channel=### method, this may work. I haven't tried it myself though.

A wireless video sender w/multiple receivers seems in order..since no control seems to be needed on anything but the host for shared viewing..
tho i don't know of any hi-def ones available..Smile

but really the vlc multicast way is the way to do it right..

I wonder could a plugin automate setting up the VLC multicast.

I must have a try setting it up manually someday to satisfy my curiosity.

Wireless AV senders can be very poor quality, and I'm sure avoiding additional cables for a video distribution system is preferred. Smile
