THIS GUIDE HAS BEEN REPLACED!!! The new guide is at...

http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...-TS-To-MP4

IF YOU TRY ANY OF THIS YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK! I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST RECORDINGS, ETC...

I really like MCEBuddy. It is well-written and works pretty well for making .MP4 files from .TS files.

Now on my .MP4 files, I like to use 160 bit rate for the AAC audio and 1000 average bit rate for video. My converted .TS files look GREAT and are a lot smaller in file size with almost unnoticeable loss of quality.

To set up MCEBuddy...

  1. Download MCEBuddy from http://www.mcebuddy.com/ and install it. There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. After the install, DO NOT RUN MCEBUDDY!
  2. Open NOTEPAD as ADMINSTRATOR.
  3. In Notepad, browse to "C:\Program Files\Tyrell\MCEBuddy\mplayer".
  4. Open "mencoder.conf".
  5. Hit the ENTER key twice to make two blank lines from the top of the file then add the code below to the top of "mencoder.conf" and re-save the file.
  6. Open MCEBuddy.
  7. Select "H.264 MP4 1000/160 TV (No Resize, 2 Pass)" from the drop-down list.
  8. Check the boxes in front of DELETE ORIGINAL (at your own risk and only if you no longer want the original .TS files), SORT BY SERIES, and SUB DIRECTORIES.
  9. Change FILE SELECTION to *.ts and change the VIDEO PATHS SOURCE and DESTINATION to where GBPVR saves recordings to.
  10. Click START to start the MCEBuddy service.

Here is the code for "mencoder.conf"...

Code:
[H264MP42P-1-1]
profile-desc="H.264 MP4 1000/160 TV (No Resize, 2 Pass)"
vf=pullup,softskip,pp=fd,hqdn3d,harddup

You might not want to run MCEBuddy during NPVR EPG updates. Say NPVR updates the EPG at midnight. You might open MCEBuddy and tell it to only convert between 2 and 20. Why 20? Because MCEBuddy might start at 8:00 PM and not finish something until 10 or 11 if it is a long recording. I also stop MCEBuddy when I am gaming.

How do you find the speed of conversion with MCEBuddy? I've used it as recently as 8 months ago and found it extremely slow. I use Freemake which is very fast or Handbrake which I find somewhere in the middle. But, I don't have it automated to run on it's own.

I use MCEBuddy for the automation. The settings I use do a two-pass so I am not sure if that is happening in Freemake or HandBrake as I haven't used them for a long time. I want to say a 1 hour .TS takes about an hour to convert in MCEBuddy using my settings to .MP4.

If you're using Mencoder why not just use Mencoder sans le MCEBUD interface?
I just glanced at the post but surely that code could be used with Mencoder alone.(and as such with a batch file running in postprocessing) No?

Jeez, I just tried MCEBuddy's latest release and it's been 3:45 to encode a one hour show and it says it still has 45 minutes to go! I don't have the fastest machine but it ain't a clunker either. I know now why I gave up on it before.

I am still using the 1.1 version. It works fine.

I like the interface and the automation.

I am not sure what you are doing wrong. It takes mine (I have an AMD 3.0 GHz 6-core CPU and 12 GB RAM) about an hour for an hour recording.

I just tried the latest MCEBuddy, it claims that it needs 18 gig of hd space to convert a 2 gig recording. I think I'll stay with Handbrake Rolleyes

I can say it did a good job of converting. Quality was very good. But, for a 2 pass, it should be. Handbrake did the same conversion in 1/3 the time on the same machine with all the commercials in while MCEBuddy did remove the commercials but that only took it 16 minutes. I can use Showanalyzer and VideoReDo to cut commericals and then Handbrake as well as the other programs mentioned previously and am pleased with it.
Bottom line is, whatever works best for you is what you should use. I'm just glad we have so many options at our disposal.

i just used Intel quicksync within dvdfab to encode an hour hd show in 20 mins..Smile
very nice quality too if you don't try to squeeze it down to unreal sizes..

3.0 6 core with 12g ram? no wonder it's only taking an hour..
