Until very recently I have always had Recurring Match set to “Exact”. I changed it to “Match start of title” to see if it would cure the problem where several programmes in a series had a slightly different title but it didnt help and didnt bother to change the setting back as it didnt seem to be doing anything.

However over the weekend I noticed NextPVR had started recording lots of “new” episodes of “Red Dwarf V” even though there should only be 6. Earlier in the year I had a manual recording looking for programmes starting with “Red Dwarf” but later changed it to “Red Dwarf V” as this series was incomplete for me. Looking up the titles of the new episodes on line I found that they are actually part of series VII and VIII. I have gone back to using “Exact” match and created a new manual recurring recording to catch the series VII and VIII programmes I am missing.

Does “Match start of title” usually crop the title of the recordings in this way?

Has far as I understand, it did what you asked. You set a manual rec for any programme with "Red Dwarf V" as character sequence at the start of it (since you had "Match start ..." as option). "Red Dwarf VI" and "Red Dwarf VII" both complied with the rec rule you set, as both contain the sequence "Red Dwarf V" at the start.

I think this was a change made just recently, since 2.5.5 was released I think. Someone requested this very functionality. I don't think sub released it as an explicit patch, I think it was one of those "I've changed this for the next release" things.

I am not querying why it made these recordings but why it renamed Red Dwarf VII and Red Dwarf VIII recordings to Red Dwarf V. It was an unexpected "feature" so I have returned settings to normal.

Understood. My recollection is that someone said they were trying to record episodes of a show where the title was different for each episode, like "ShowName - the first one", "ShowName - another one", "ShowName - yet another". So the user had put in a recording like you did, requesting recording "ShowName" and to match the start of the title, so that it would record all the different episodes that started with that name. But then the complaint was that NPVR listed all the different episodes separately by the full title, rather than grouping them all together. So sub said he'd made a change "for the next release" where it would use only the matched portion to create the title for the group, which made *that* user happy. Now that's exactly the behavior you don't want, and why sub sometimes feels he just can't win.

Now, I can't exactly recall when this request was made, and certainly not by whom, and I may be fouling up the details, but I'm pretty sure that's the gist of it.

I can understand the request for a change as I have quite a few recordings where annoyingly the episode title or subtitle is included in the title like “Horizon: Are We Still Evolving” or “Ruth Rendell: The Double” so each recording has its own sub directory. I can see a lot of merit in being able to group these series recordings in the same sub directory but in most cases I have looked at chopping the end off title as it does now deletes important info about the recording which is lost!

For recordings like these I setup a manual recurring recording looking for key words in the title but “Match start of title” would be a feature I would use if it kept the original recording title. However as has been said fixing a problem for one person breaks it for someone else!!
