I'm curious if there is any discussion among the devs to have a "PVR Backend Only" version?

Since XBMC has all the other functions (music, photos, etc) and only needs a good PVR backend, it would be great to see a "Lite" version of NextPVR that only has 1 function... PVR.

I'm interested too.

this is pretty much what I use via Brian's ndroid app which hooks into my npvr/media server. When XBMC is sorted on Android I plan to use that as a front end to the npvr backend.

Isn't it light enough ? You don't have to run nextpvr client to use it as a xbmc backend. I don't get it ?

Yeah, it pretty much is already the lite version. You only need to run front end when you want to configure you tuners, scan etc. The frontend (npvr.exe) and backend (nrecord.exe) are entirely separate. You dont need to use the nextpvr.exe front end if you're using xbmc as the front end instead.

NextPVR is already much lighter and easier to setup than any of the alternative xbmc backends.

With all due respect. I don't get any of this at the moment!

Am about to play with NextPVR release 2.5.9

There is apparently support from KRA with xbmc, in some way. A load of stuff mvallevand has done to do with xbmc and a plugin?

And all of this is supported by sub?

And now we have an xbmc thread on the forum which is equally hard to follow!

I don't mind, it all sounds very brilliant. But can someone just explain what is what? And how it may work? Then perhaps this could be explained via the wiki in more layperson's terms...

cheers as ever

Temporarily ignoring the OT post, the other options I have tried like FTR, Myth and MediaPortal require MySQL or MS SQL Server, as opposed to NextPVR's straight forward small but efficient sqlite database. My backend is complete headless and I can do 95% of system maintenance via ssh and sftp. A web config program would be nice though since that would pretty much eliminate the need to ever remote desktop to the server.

Martin what is the OT post of mine? This is all so hard to follow! I'll move this to docs thread after this.

Sorry for OT but honestly this stuff is really hard to follow! Sorry for hijack of thread...

Steeb,

I'm just another nextpvr xbmc user, when I get exited about someting I tend to give it a lot of focus Wink I have nothing to do with development, I've compiled linux plugin for my own gain, and share it with community since none else was doing it. I've been on this forum 1 week, don't really know how stuff works here, I like forums and if people discuss something I care about I join in.

I suspect XBMC plugin is going to be messy until there is a feature freeze on the pvr side of xbmc, so expect lots of problem posts. There could be a wiki howto on how to install it, but I don't see much point to do it until xbmc is feature freeze, so it's more of a stable enviroment to document against, or it might be hell maintaining it.

Currently xbmc-pvr is considered unstable (alpha), so I personally wouldn't recomend people installing it on a system where they want 100% uptime. Unless you just install one build and stick with it.

Installing windows builds from wileecoyote's site should be fairly easy and safe, linux, RPi etc is another ballgame, many more ways to fail.

Thank you KRA.

I too get excited and like to discuss! I would disagree on one comment?

I don't really understand all of this but as sub has built in xbmc support for NextPVR, flakey or not, it needs to start documenting on the wiki.... Wink maybe Big Grin

but only small stuff nothing big?

cheers

theres a few things i find easier in 4tr

1. channel mappings to cards
- i have a quad tuner i scan for new channels i can just map those to the other 3 cards easily with a left/right list (move them to right on all 3 lists)
- in NPVR if you configure them for the first time, you can copy all the settings, but after that if you edit them, they arent all the same i believe

2. changing channel numbers
- in 4tr its a datagrid and can quick press [number] + enter to move down the list and quickly change the numbers (for 60 odd channels this is helpful)
- in npvr this is a little harder/slower and I cant seem to sort the channels

3. channel sorting in datagrids
- cant seem to do this in NPVR

4. unmerge of channels
- accidentally merged a SD feed of TV 1, 2, 3 with DVB-T HD feeds. Was suppose to merge the TV 1 HD, TV 2 HD, TV 3 HD DVB-S2 with the DVB-T feeds and rename the DVB-S SD TV1/2/3 to TV [123] SD, but after they were merged i couldnt find a way to unmerge them.

all that stuff is usually fine if you're not using a lot of channels, and just standard freeview (in nz) but as soon as you are using a cardreader and sky it gets a lot slower in NPVR than in 4tr.

not trying to complain about NPVR, those are the only things I find easier in 4tr, theres a much bigger list of things i find easier in NPVR (especially error logging, its terrible in 4tr way to many log files).

on a completely unrelated note, having mad issues trying to get NPVR working nicely on a machine already using 4tr, GUI is locking up before showing scanning window (log said waiting for card). i suspect this is due to something else trying to use the tuner cards, but killed eveything 4tr related. I dont really want to format this machine as its my server with oscam and everything setup on it. OSCAM was originally a pain to setup, and also i have many xbmc clients around the house running openelec on HTPCs working fine with 4tr, so if NPVR isnt as good as 4tr for a few months I would have to revert to 4tr until it is, otherwise everyone would bitch at me.

I'm currently back with my folks until my house is finished in feb, at that point I'll just use normal DVB-T and no sky, so this wont be an issue then Smile

moved DVB-T usb to a separate machine and installed NPVR, SD channels picture and sound were good quality but out of sync (by a few seconds) on pi but HD channels were full of artifacts. they looked fine in NPVR app itself (didnt have any sound on that machine, but i assume they would've been in sync locally).

errr maybe i should of made this a new thread....
