I am using the dual tuner HDhomerun unit with TWC cable in the US for qam. when i record shows that are 1080i, most of the time i am unable to skip forward or back, but the file will play. posting earlier someone suggested to use ffmpeg to place in new container essentially copying audio stream and video stream to new ts container and that will correct it. when i do that i notice that on these files the error seems to be a bad audio packet very early in the file. is there anything i can do in terms of setup that might correct this ? i am not sure how the recording is done, but i think it is just a capture of what hdhomerun is sending. this problem does not happen on stations that broadcast in 720p ? anyone have any ideas ?

It could be cause by glitches due to the network streaming but I haven't been able to completely determine that (or fix it). I still have to run the files through ffmpeg or video redo.

I'll be moving my server to a new system soon so I can test my theory better then.

I've been seeing something like this, specifically on a couple of FOX programs that hit an error around 20 minutes in. Npvr won't play the file past that ~20 min point at all. I tried using ffmpeg 'copy' but it only copied the first ~20 minutes on the files that have the issue. VLC will play the complete file. What's weird is that it's always at the same place (always the 2nd commercial break). I first saw it on an episode of Glee, then it cropped up on last week's Fringe. I've only seen it happen on FOX. Also, it only seems to happen with HD recordings.

It used to be that, for some channels, my Hauppauge DVB-T tuners would stop sending video. The video would stop arriving when the video was white lettering on a black background. The were specific ads that always ended by displaying a slogan in white on black and I knew, when these ads began, that the video would stop when the ad ended. The problem got discussed on Hauppauge forums but never got fixed by Hauppauge. It only ever happened on channels that were broadcasting on a mux using a "second best" quality transmission "insert DVB jargon here". The problem went away when all muxes switched to being not "second best". I expect that this does not help at all but it is a good example of stuff happens.

I remember a sample from FOX sent by a forum user and the broadcaster stopped sending the PAT/PMT packets so it wasn't NextPVR compatible, in fact most programs can't play it. Just because a STB can play it live or via an a cable co's STB doesn't mean it is a "good" stream.

That would have been me. I have to "fix" almost everything I record on Fox. I forgot that I sent you a copy of the stream. The fact that Graham may have experienced the same thing on the same channel makes me doubt my network (as in LAN not television) streaming theory. NBC has recently started doing it as well on a couple of programs though.

So how is VLC playing it, I wonder? I guess i'm lucky that it continues to record.

VLC's internal decoders are more tolerant of the errors than any DirectShow file source filter. Recording is not a problem because NextPVR is simply dumping the stream to disc and not attempting to parse the stream. Parsing occurs during playback of the recorded file.

My glitches in the stream always seemed to occur on commercial breaks where it switches from the National feed to a local commercial.
