I have been working for 3 weeks, trying to get this NEXTPVR to work and still same problem. It might be that I dont understand how to edit the xml file after I do the filter check. Apparently it says I have to have software endocder and multiplex rather than hardware but I cannot figure out what I need to put in to the .xml file from reading the directions. Pasting below is my filter check log.

Did you install WinTV 7? That is the best way to install SoftPVR when you own Hauppauge devices.

What version of Windows are you running? Hauppauge Support does not list Windows 8 as supported for the 950, and Win8 typically lacks an MPEG2 video decoder that NextPVR can use (although a decoder can be obtained easily enough).

What type of channels do you expect to tune? If your cable provider still delivers basic channels in analog, or if you plan to capture from an STB using S-video or Composite inputs, then you will need the SoftPVR components mentioned by Martin and described on this Wiki page: http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...ugeSoftPVR

However the 950 can also tune over-the-air ATSC channels, and SoftPVR analog support isn't needed for that. If the tuner is actually a 950Q, then it can also receive Clear QAM digital cable channels.

You don't need to add anything to the AnalogDevices.xml for the HVR-950, it's already there. All you need to do is get SoftPVR installed, and the best way to do that for a Hauppauge device is to install WinTV7. See http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...ugeSoftPVR

In looking at the wiki analog devices walkthrough, I can certainly see why you were fighting so hard to make changes in AnalogDevices.xml and banging your head against the wall... it barely mentions the need for SoftPVR, which is actually the #1 most important thing without which none of the rest of it means anything, and the tone of the page suggests that all the mess with FilterCheck and AnalogDevices.xml is something you're likely to need to do. The truth is almost no one needs to worry about any of that, unless they have an obscure tuner device that hasn't been seen much before.... all the common devices are in there already, and some rather uncommon ones are there too.

Finally, I should just verify that you are trying to tune Analog channels, correct? This is all irrelevant if you're trying to tune digital channels; digital devices are detected automatically, nothing extra needed.

I am using windows 7. Previously I had a 950Q and installed WINTV and was getting same results I am now with the 950 so I returned it for refund and then bought this 950 that came with no software, installed WINTV and went through installing drivers and then did SOFTPVR as in the instructions. Im trying to get the local analog channels, plugging into the cable connection on the wall. All the channels show up correct in the TVGUIDE and in the channel list when right click on main window and select channels. Yes I have installed SOFTPVR as the instructions. As I say, I think it involves editing the xml file but I cannot figure out what Im supposed to edit into it. I have decided if I cant get it working from someone's help on this forum Im going to sell it on Ebay and give up.
Thanks

You don't need to do anything to the AnalogDevice.xml file, since NPVR saw the tuner and allowed you to create a channel list.

Many cablecos require you to use a STB to connect to an analog device. You can try calling your cableco and asking if they still provide analog cable. Most don't.

After installing soft-pvr/WinTV, does the 950 show up in Settings>Devices? If not, soft-pvr did not install correctly. If you installed winTV7, then soft-pvr was already installed with it, and you did not need to do the instructions for running the batch file or registering the filter. Doing both may have hosed things. You might try uninstalling WinTV, running HCW Clear if they still provide it to clean up, then reinstalling from scratch, including the drivers. Check back with us for more clear advice before you do this, because my experience with Hauppauge is very dated, and only with a PVR150.

If the 950 shows up in Devices as an analog device, then you need to go to Setup for it and import the channels from your TV guide source, an TV XML file or schedules direct. Sounds like you already have the channels available for the TV guide, so you should just need to import them to the tuner.

Do you have an old analog TV that you could plug into the wall to see what's there? Probably faster and more reliable than calling the cableco.

@kh6gmp -
no, you really don't need to add anything to the AnalogDevices.xml, unless you've already fouled something up in there. The stock AnalogDevices.xml contains this section:
Code:
    <Device filter="WinTV HVR-980 Capture">
        <Name>Hauppauge HVR-950</Name>
        <Type>SOFT_ENCODE</Type>
    </Device>
This is the correct entry for the HVR-950 (non-Q); yes, the driver for the HVR-950 calls it an HVR-980... it's just marketed as the HVR-950; there is also an entry for the HVR-950Q (which is also correct for the HVR-850, because it uses the same chip and driver).

You really haven't told us what problem you're actually having. All you've said is that it isn't working.... what isn't working? Also it really would be helpful if you .zip up your NPVR\logs folder and post it.

So is the problem that you only get a black screen and no sound when you try to watch live TV? If you right-click and select Settings, then click on Decoders, are Microsoft decoders selected for MPEG2 Video and MPEG1 Audio? Is Video Renderer set to EVR and Audio Render to Default?

If you tried to edit AnalogDevices with Notepad, it's possible that you might have saved it as .txt rather than .xml. In that case, open with Notepad, select File->Save As, put .xml after the file name and change "Save as type" to All Files, then click Save. [Edit] You should then restart NPVR Service. I could post a clean copy of AnalogDevices if you think you need it.

The logs johnsonx42 mentioned are in C:\Users\Public\NPVR. You can attach the zipped Logs folder to a post by clicking "Go Advanced" and then the paperclip button.
