Remote Player?

Hi,

Just a thought, but - a remote player would be nice, one that allows a person to use NextPVR on different machines (and mobiles?), and all players keep the last played position ... so pick up on one machine, after watching on another?

Really very impressed by NextPVR - this is my last hurdle, then I can get rid of all other tools ... Smile.

Thanks so much!

Have you had a look at the nextpvr client settings? That should do as you want as a client playing a video should update the database with the played position.

I believe using the web interface (newa) will do similar when using mobile or a computer without the client installed.

My apologies, but I'm not finding the client you're referring to. Likely me (very likely me!), but can you point to what you're talking about?

Will also take a look at NEWA.

Thanks!

He's referring to installing NextPVR on another machine on your network, then going into the Settings->Devices page, and ticking the 'act as client' checkbox (and entering your server name and database share).

Makes sense, thanks! I'm also trying to get it on my mobile, that part may not be quite as simple ... Wink.

Hi,

Actually, a bit of digging around, and the NextPVR channel on Plex is almost ideal - allows watching on a remote client (using Plex), and the playback position is stored back to NextPVR ... so pick back up there. Excellent. Just can't seem to resume in Plex (NextPVR channel) quite right, but that's minor. Posted a different thread about this, to not sidetrack this one.

Thanks!

I use Kodi as my remote client for a number of reasons. I use it:
  • on RaspPI for hooking up to my flat screen TVs
  • on PC for my office
  • on Nexus tablet and Samsung Phone for mobile use (both Android).

On RaspPI, I use the OpenELEC distribution, for Android, simply load it from the AppStore. I've setup the common shared MySQL database, so the library is in sync on all devices, and watched, playback position, artwork etc.. are consistent regardless of device. Additionally, as long as your TV supports CEC, you're TV remote will have basic functionality for controlling the UI (up, down, left, right, select, stop, play, pause, return).

I don't watch much liveTV anymore, but there are a few options for watching LiveTV on Kodi. Sub has a plugin, there is a XNEWA plugin, and for those of you with Silicon Dust HDHR, there is a plugin also (although, I think it still needs some work for keeping video/audio in-sync). This allows me to cut down on the number of cable boxes in the house and have internet content without having to buy a 'smart' TV.

Some folks have complained that RaspPI is not powerful enough to work effectively as a client, I personally have not found that to be true. You'll have to purchase the $5 MPeg license, but really that's a small price to pay for such a versatile client.

I have also heard good results using the Amazon Fire stick (slightly less $$ than the RasPI), you can side-load Kodi, although I have not experimented with that yet...

Thanks very much for the detailed response - much appreciated! Your setup sounds almost exactly like I want to configure, so I will try to copy some of this ... Smile. A few questions though, if you don't mind,
- I was trying to figure out the connectivity, but realized I was being stupid - just set up my mobile to access NextPVR client (external to network, port forward) ... correct?
- with this direct connection all should work, but ... when remote I don't to stream directly (to Kodi), rather transcode. Does this happen (automatically?)? I can't stream at full resolution / rate. And of course want to stream at different rates on cellular (3G) vs. WiFi.
- why use the database? Is that to sync (download) the media to the client? I admit, I don't want to do that (insufficient room on the client). So no need for the database connection then?
- I also want to have an XBox 360 client ("extender"). Is there a Kodi client for Xbox 360? Minor item.
- Do you happen to know, does Kodi make use of comskip info? And the output XML info from NextPVR?

Thanks again!!!

When we talk about clients, it's normally in the context of within. Your local nnetwork. I do t know if anyone would advocate opening up the main nextpvr port to the Internet.

For that I'd use newa - the built in web server. Or personally I'd add my recordings to plex or use the nextpvr channel for plex and let that be your external interface. As it's designed for transcoding and setting resolution be client type/by connection type.

Makes sense, and that's the path I was going down to be honest - but I found out that the NextPVR channel in Plex can't play from my current position in NextPVR ... Sad. So I was hoping that perhaps Kodi may let me do that.

Thanks!
