I have upgraded my windows 7 x64 pro to windows 10 pro. I upgraded my NPVR to 3.5.7 before upgrading to windows 10. The recording service will not start when windows boots up. I can manually start it and manually start ntray and then am able to record after that, but I need this to be automatic.

I have done a fresh install of NPVR several times including manually deleting the recording service via command prompt. But still it will not start with windows 10. I also disabled my antivirus before one of the installs, I have installed as administrator, and I have verified that all .exe have run as administrator enabled. Nothing makes a difference.

Any other suggestions for what else to look at??

Log attached, although there do not seem to be all the same logs anymore, just the record log..was that a change in 3.5.7??

I have previously upgraded other PCs that were Home editions that did not have problems with NPVR...could there be an issue with PRO?

I'm not aware of any reason why you'd be having this problem. There is no error shown in the log. Is "nrecord.exe" running in the task list?

There was no changes to the logs that are created. They're only created when use the various parts of the app though, like NDigitalHost.log when you do a digital recording, npvr.log when you run the front end, and renames to .1/.2 etc when restarting the components.

No, there is plenty of people here running Win10 Pro.

No, nrecord.exe was not in the task list.

So I decided to create my own windows scheduled task for windows startup and I can get the service to start that way, but not Ntray. The scheduler task gets stuck in a running state without Ntray showing in the system tray - however I can see the task running in task manager. This would be a simple 'START' command for Ntray.exe, correct? Or how do I get this to run and show up in the system tray?

I can't think why it's not starting.

The 'NPVR Recording Service' is a Windows service, so run the Services control panel, view the properties of the 'NPVR Recording Service' and check it set to auto start. If it is set to auto start, but isn't, the next step would be checking the Windows Event Viewer to see why it isn't starting it.

NTray.exe is just a regular Windows application. It's normally started with a shortcut in the user's Startup folder. It doesn't depend on anything running, etc.

Yes, I checked services and made sure it was set to autostart.

In event viewer, besides a ton of Media Center errors (which I don't use Media Center, and I know it is suppose to be removed in windows 10), the only error I see for NPVR is failure to start due to service not responding in a timely fashion. And just before that something about Net.TCP listener adapter port sharing failing to start (not sure if that is related)..

So I just need to add a shortcut to Ntray in my startup folder - if windows 10 has oneSmile

Found the startup folder, but NextPVR Tray was already there...??? I replaced it with a new one that indicates run as administrator, since that is one of the changes I made to the .exe. But that still did not work.

I guess I either live with it, or attempt a clean install of windows 10, or roll back to windows 7 - which was working flawlesslySad

I think the warning here is to not upgrade to windows 10 with NPVR already installed. The other upgrades I did, I did not install NPVR until after the windows 10 upgrade, then it worked just fine...

Tons of people have done that same upgrade without this problem. Was there any error message in Windows Event Viewer?

No, there were no event viewer messages regarding the Ntray not loading.

We have decided to roll back to windows 7, uninstall NPVR, then upgrade again and install NPVR after that to see what happens.

Follow-up information for anyone else having this problem:

I went so far as to roll back to 7, recover from image since roll back was corrupt, uninstall NPVR then upgrade to 10 again. Same problem...

However, I did resolve the issue by uninstalling NPVR, deleting ALL registry entries associated with it, then reinstalling. In addition, I had to change the service to NOT allow service to interact with desktop or it would not start and set it to restart under the Recovery tab. Things then looked great, all was working, until...

I discovered I had installed 3.4.8, not the latest. So, did the upgrade to 3.5.7 at which point Smart Screen filter required approval, which was not required with 3.4.8. Finished install, and boom, service will NOT start again - but at least NTRAY stuck around.

First off, clearly the registry entry for windows 7 is very different from windows 10 (I looked at them in 10 after reinstall, and there were quite a bit more of them). Something there was clearly stopping the Ntray from running and as I said before, upgrading from 7 to 10 while NPVR is installed does not work.

Second, there is something about the latest version that windows 10 smart screen does not like.

Rolling back to NPVR 3.4.8 after deleting registries again, and I am back in business.....

It would be nice if you had a 'Clean' uninstall option that removes all the registries as well..just a thoughtSmile

There is nothing different about 3.5.7 - it takes several thousand downloads of a specific file before SmartScreen stops warning about it. Give it another week or so and by then SmartScreen will stop giving this warning.
