I had a very similar issue for weeks, where the PC would fail or just lock up. It happened very frequently (20 times a day), while playing or stopping a recording. It never created a diagnostic dump or logs, and so it was nearly impossible to troubleshoot.
I felt sure that the problem was with decoders, and tried every decoder I could, even installing software that included different decoders, just to try them. After pulling out most of my remaining hair, i was about to replace the PC (I have 5 other computers that have the same NPVR & Windows version, which run fine without failures).
On a whim, I checked for updated drivers, and found none. But, I did find a BIOS update, so I thought what the heck. The BIOS update did not mention any issue like I was having, but it totally corrected the issue. It is a Foxconn mini-ITX system with an I3 processor. FWIW...
