I've noticed the following message for a lot of entries on this screen marked "failed": "Recording service not running at recording time."

It seems that if I delete the recording file after viewing it with something other than NPVR, like VLC, then delete it, the Recordings->What's New screen shows this message. The message does make one pause and think something may have gone wrong.

If the file can't be found, why include it in the list at all? It contributes clutter and confusion.

Hmm, that's the first time I've heard any one mention this. Can you try to confirm.

Usually it wouldn't. Can you check you've still got <AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>true</AutoRemoveMissingRecordings> in your config.xml?

I really don't think doing what you described could ever cause that problem, at least not without some other problem or very unexpected condition happening at the same time. There's a specific sequence of events that cause that marking to be placed on a recording, and deleting the file somewhere else isn't one of them.

Normally recordings with files that go missing are automatically purged from the database (or not) depending on the setting <AutoRemoveMissingRecordings> in config.xml. If True the recording will be removed from the database, if False it will left there but won't be playable (obviously). Neither scenario results in the the recording being marked Failed.

You'd need to post your logs showing this happening to determine why you're seeing this.

(haha, as usual sub types faster and is more brief)
