Hi sub,
Well, my technical curiosity got the better of me and I gave it a try. Unfortunately I did not find a log file named ntray.log. What I did was rename Ntray.exe to xxxNtray.exe and then copied the new Ntray.exe into the same directory and did the same scenario with pressing the green IR button a few times and then stopped NPVR and looked at the logs and there was no ntray.log. I even re-booted figuring that because I have NPVR starting as soon as it boots it might have run the old Ntray and stopped the new one from starting, but after the re-boot (which had the new Ntray.exe) and trying the green button and then exiting still no ntray.log!
First you have to stop Ntray, you can use the Stop NPVR shortcut.
That way it will be possible to change the file on disk.
On win7 you better COPY the old Ntray to something else, then you copy the new one over the old Ntray,
that way ntray.exe will keep the permissions on disk.
Then you use the shortcut Start NPVR

Hi Handy.Man,
I think I understand, but its a little more complicated than I thought!
First off by Start and Stop NPVR shortcut do you mean "Stop NPVR Service" and Start NPVR Service" under the NPVR apps in the Win start menu?
Second, all my PCs are now Win 10 so do I need to do that COPY of the original Ntray and save it away someplace else and then copy the new Ntray on top of the original to keep the original file's permissions.
If all this is correct than I understand but I will have to wait until tomorrow to give it a try!

Yes

Yes, you can copy it to another folder, this way you don't have to rename it.
I your specific case, I guess you original file is now named xxxNtray.exe ?

Hi Handy.Man,
Well, still no joy in creating the Ntray.log! Here's what I did. I have two PCs with almost the same TV hardware and software: my desktop and the Home Theater PC. The main thing is to get the HTPC as close as possible to having the same features as Win Media Center, and I'm there except for some IR remote commands. Thus the reason for getting more info on the IR data received. Both the desktop and the HTPC have NPVR installed and working.
Since its easier to work on the desktop (the HTPC has a gyroscopic "flying mouse" which can be frustrating to use!) I did as you suggested on the desktop. First I stopped the NPVR Service. Then I copied the original NTray.exe from its install folder to a temp folder. Then I copied the updated NTray.exe into the install folder saying that it should overwrite the existing file. Then I started the NPVR Service and started NPVR. Went to Live TV, then played part of a recorded program and then exited. I looked in the log directory and could not find NTray.log!
Now I assume this NTray.log file would be created whenever NPVR was run, but I just want to say that my desktop does not have an IR remote sensor while the HTPC does. Is NTray.log only for IR remote info?
Once again, thanks to everyone for your help!!
Gerry

Normaly the NTray.exe doesn't produce a log. This updated version was turned on the log file creation in NTray.exe, so we could see messages of it's processing of green button messages etc.

Hi sub,
I'm a little confused!! What I meant to say was that if the updated NTray.exe is being used will it create a log every time NPVR is run, or will it only create a log file if IR remote data is being processed. I replace the original NTray.exe with the updated one on my desktop and ran NPVR with the updated NTray.exe but I did not find an Ntray.log file. But my desktop does not have an IR remote sensor and if the NTray.log is only created from processing IR remote data then that would explain why I didn't get an NTray.log file. But if using the updated NTray.exe always produces a log file whenever NPVR is run, then something is wrong on my desktop PC as it did not produce a log file even though the updated NTray.exe was used.
I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing on my desktop before I tried it on the HTPC as it kind of a pain to do these kinds of things on the HTPC.
NTray.exe is a utility that is run independently of the NextPVR front end. It's run immediately when the user logs in, and shows an icon in the system tray. It's responsibility is to change colors when a tuner is being used, and to monitor for green button presses - and run NextPVR.exe when it notices one.
Just having NTray.exe running should be enough to get a log file. It doesn't need to see the IR to create a log file.
I've rebuilt it, and reattached, in case something went wrong last time. I've checked I'm definitely getting an ntray.log from it.

Hi sub,
SUCCESS!! Well, at least on my desktop! I wasn't sure if I still had to do the stuff about stopping and starting the service but I did it anyway and then started up NPVR, went to Live TV and then exited. And this is what I got for NTray.log:
[...startup]
2016-02-23 12:51:03.522 [INFO][1] About to connect to remote recording service
2016-02-23 12:51:03.538 [DEBUG][1] RecordingServiceProxy@exit
2016-02-23 12:51:04.616 [DEBUG][1] Tray is using local server
I have to go out now but definitely this afternoon I will do the same thing for the HTPC and then post the results I get when I use the green button on my remote.
Once again THANKS VERY MUCH for all of your help. It is GREATLY appreciated!!!
