I finally got the AVI support working. Unfortunately "something" makes the sound drift seconds away from the picture.

What can I improve and/or change to avoid this?

btw, the server PC is an AMD 64 3200+, well suited for the task.

Make sure they paly fine on your computer. If they do, them some some processing in filters like ffdshow could be throwing it off. You may also need different codec versions. Try more than one kind of avi codec file (maybe an xvid and divx).

Thanks for you effort.

The files I've tried all are in synch when played 'locally'.

I am using ffdshow, but with default settings everywhere, I plan to mess with that stuff when I'm up running.

If this is of any help:
According to gspot these filters/codecs are used:

Try installing the a/v codecs for the file (like xvid/mp3), and disbaling the same ones in ffdshow.

Thanks again. I must admitt that the ffdshow config interface is a bit complex. Am I assuming right if I think it's the "ffdshow video encoder configuration" I should run, and that the codecs I should disable are in the "Codecs" item (on top of the list) in the second tab marked "Decoder"?

If that's true, then something is not doing what as it looks like. I have disabled all the codecs in that list, but gspot still says that ffdshow is the preferred codec.

This thread goes more into ffdshow than I excpected, shall I change forum/topic?

It may do that if it's the only versions you have installed. Try restarting after you disable them. You could uninstall ffdshow altother to test. If you don't have anything special set up, you'll have nothing to lose.

You are right. But I have other codecs installed, ffdshow was one of my attempts to solve the problem.

I de-installed ffdshow and now I'm running the original xvid decoder but with the same result as above.

So basically I'm back on step one again, but with fewer options. I will give up this for now.

If you or anyone else has a fool-proof solutions when it comes to codecs, versions and settings I would be glad to read it.

Nity!

What kind of network are you playing these over? I remember this happening to me when I tried to play a high birate video over a 10Mbs (not 100) network (and the cable was degraded, too). Once I got the connection sped up w/ a clean line, it was fine. It was so many years ago I forgot.

If you want to test this, recompress the file at like 100 kbs or even less. If it stays in sync, you're just not getting enough data from A to B.

Another possibility is that you are playing a NTSC video over a PAL MVP (or vice versa).

Capone: Well, the file is a high bitrate video when in AVI mode, but I thought the transcoder took care of that part. I have never seen the problem with core mpeg files, only avi files.

I am running a tuned 100Mbit cat-5 network and have never had any performance issues when watching AVI files located on the same fileserver but decoded and processed with GB-PVR on a regular PC connected to the tv-set.

I just don't get it, how can the network delay a part of the stream, isn't just everything bundeled together? Anyway, I will try this ofcourse, thanks!

bluesxman: This sounds reasonable in some cases. Some of the files I've tested are recorded in hdtv from US (Yeah, they just ended up on my harddisk, don't know how) and I'm running a PAL MVP.

Can I have ffdshow to do something about this, and how can I tell if it's NTSC or PAL.

Also, wouldn't this affect the synch when played locally on the server as well?
