I am very very new to this (Extracting Subtitles), so, I have what may be a stupid question

Does the files that i record in NPVR have built in subtitles? Or, does it depend on the PVR unit I am using?

I am currently using a "Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR High Definition Personal Video Recorder"

I also have a paid version of "Video ReDo TV Suite 5"

So, does NPVR do what I need? and, do I have the tools to do this ?

It depends on the device you're using.

You'll get closed captions in the file with digital tuners, inserted by the broadcaster prior to transmission.

You'll get closed captions in the file with a subset of analog tuners, specifically those that have a hardware encoder that include cc data in their output (like the older PVR500/150/250 etc).

There is no closed captions in the video stream produced by your HD-PVR. This is a limitation of set top boxes with component/hdmi connection to capture device (closed caption data is not passed over this type of connection).

Thanks for the quick and detailed reply.....

I'm not that worried about it....it really isn't a big deal to me...I just always try out every possible option available to me Smile

I know this thread is old, but, I wanted to ask something

I now have an HDHomerun Prime device with the Comcast Cable Card inserted,...... Will THIS device now let me extract subtitles ?

Yes, you'll generally get the closed captions the broadcaster inserted prior to transmission.
