I recently started playing around with KODI on my client pc (I still like NPVR better). When I then tried to play some of my digital music files on my client, they wouldn't play. They are almost all flac files. The files are there, if I try playing them from file mgr., they play and they play on my server pc using NPVR. Any ideas what's happened and what I can do about it? By the way, they will also play on my client pc if I use KODI.

Are you saying they wont play in NextPVR running on client machine, via the Music Library? If so, this will just come down to Windows being able to find a set of decoders for the type of file you're trying to play. You might just need to install the LAV Splitter on the client.

I thought it might be a decoder problem but I have the LAV splitter installed on the client (and yes, your description of the problem is accurate). I'll try reinstalling it and see if that works.

NextPVR only explicitly sets things up for the playback of .ts files. Any other file type - it just lets Windows try to find an appropriate set of decoders. In this particular case, it sounds like Windows isn't find a set of decoders for the file you're trying to play.

I tried reinstalling the LAV splitter but am still having no luck. KODI will play the flac files and I can play them by clicking on a file in file manager, but they will not play in NPVR (all of this on the client machine). NPVR is seeing the files and accompanying images, it just doesn't play them. Doesn't make any sense to me.

What is file manger using to play them? If you confgured a native application and not DirectShow you might need a DS filter like madFlAC

If you download GraphStudio Next, and choose 'render media file' from the menu, and select your .flac file, you'll see what decoders Windows is choosing for that file type on your machine (or possibly give you an error if it can't find an appropriate set of decoders). This is the same mechanism NextPVR will use for playing this file type, so will give you some valuable insights into whether your machine is setup to be able to play .flac files.

Martin, the files played in WMP. How would I configure .flac to play with DS since that doesn't seem to be a choice when I use Control Panel to link a program to a file type? WMP is shown as the program to play .flac but that doesn't happen when I'm trying to play them in NPVR.

Yeah WMP in Win 10 has native FLAC support. Did you try in GraphStudioNext like sub suggested? My files play with the old decoder from xiph.org

In testing yesterday I did find one high bitrate file that DS couldn't connect the pin on and so in NextPVR I changed the Music Decoder to the Speaker and not the DS Speaker and it worked.

Sorry to be so late in getting back to you, Martin. After I asked the question above it occured to me I should try madFlAC that you recommended. That worked for me and all my .flac files now play in the client NPVR. Thanks so much for your help, it's greatly appreciated.
