I was going down the route of having a HTPC connected to my UHD TV in my family room but for various reasons I think I'm going to abandon this approach and purchase a streaming box (probably a Nvidia Shield) to connect to the TV. I would purchase some other less expensive extender for my other HD TV.

My hardware:
Windows 10 PC with Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD tuner card, USB 2.0 ports, 10/100 Ethernet.
Router with gigabit ports
WD My Cloud (Personal Storage - has gigabit ports and USB 3.0 ports for expansion)
3TB USB 3.0 hard drive that I would dedicate for media storage

My goal is that the system, once set up, is easy to use and has quick response when viewing TV and recorded media (switching channels, pause, fast forward, etc).
I would also like to minimize the time the Windows 10 PC is running so it needs to be able to sleep but wake when needed.
My understanding is the Windows 10 PC would need to be the server since it has the tuner card, correct?
My preference would be for the Shield to be the server with the hard drive connected to it if possible.
And (of course) I'd prefer not to buy any more hardware other than the clients (at least for the time being).
Thanks in advance for your input

Never mind about this post. I called B&H and they will let me return the Hauppauge tuner card. So I'm going to do my homework (hopefully a little better this time) and figure out my path forward.

Glad you can return it. It sounds like you might be better served with the Silicon Dust DVR. You might not need the Shield if you can configure their app on the WD
