So had some issues with windows and chose to reload the os using the windows defender fresh start feature. Overall that was painless. Microsoft claims that files will be left intact but programs need to be reinstalled.

So for Npvr the result was that my recordings and my epg files stayed where they were but Npvr needed reinstallation.

It's back up and running now. But I have a couple of issues.

The first one was that when I reinstalled I got a message at the end of the installer that it could not start Npvr because it detected another instance running. This made me think that part of Npvr must be installed in some place that Microsoft considered it a file and kept it. Undaunted I reboot and this time Npvr started and I reprogrammed the channels and xmltv listings. Seems to work fine. Watched a channel. So this mystery is sort of solved.

2nd issue. Went to tv listings and picked a show to record thirty min in future. However the recorder did not start when the show came on. Upon checking my recurring show listings .,empty. .. redid the recording request..again empty. At this Pont I thought does it record at all? Yes ctrl K starts the recorder. So that was good.

So back to why won't record from epg? Any ideas appreciated. Perhaps it's some conflict with the remnants of settings that microsoft considered personal files?

You'll probably need to post the logs showing an attempted recording.

Might be a false alarm. I just went back to geT the logs and took a third look at the recurring recording screen. Instead of empty it now had 2 copies of the same show recording request. The original and the second attempt thaT did not work. So I deleted the original.

I also placed a third recording request from the epg and this time it started recording ok. So where did the original two vanish too for an hour? Never seen any time delayed reactions like this before.

Anyhow it's working now. So we may never know. Thanks for the quick reply.

So I spoke to soon. One recording was working so I killed it and set up another. The 2nd one did not work. It stayed as pending.

So I am attaching the logs I snapped just a few minutes ago if someone can advise.

Many thanks

What was the recording that failed?

Did you copy your npvr.db3 from your old machine? If so, have you done an 'update epg' since then?

Yes I did an update epg. No I did not copy the old npvr.db3 mostly cause I was not familiar with what I should copy beyond epg and my recordings.

However the glitches appear to be over now. The solution was to stop npvr, unplug the USB tuner, reboot the machine, reinsert the tuner and then startup nextpvr. Its been recording fine now for 12 hours. I guess the glitches were caused by the Microsoft fresh start idea where they wipe out some system files but not necessarily all of them. (Even with the glitches the amount of effort involved in getting it going again was less than having to copy all my personal files off and then back again so I have to say the Fresh Start worked out ok.) If I ever do it again I guess I better make a list of what other NPVR files I need to save for reinstallation.

This leads me to ask... where are the channels stored and where are the recurring recording orders stored?

Edward
PS. One big bonus I see after all this is the CPU utilization has fallen about 10-15% from where it was with the clean Windows 10 install versus the original OEM install of W10. I also used the opportunity to update the BIOS with the newest f/w. All in all an unxpected pleasant surprise.

Simply stated, NextPVR stores everything in npvr.db3 and config.xml at Users\Public\NPVR ... http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...alledParts

So I thought I was done here. No such luck. Windows got me again. Yesterday I copied a different version of NextPVR app into the Program Files after deleting the original the installer put there. Seconds later I ran a quick test and all was good. Came back in the morning after the 3 am EPG update to find there was no data in the EPG.

After some searching I discovered that somehow post refresh and post reinstall the NextPVR app was using the updateepg.bat file located in the windows.old folder the Windows Fresh Start created when it updated the system. I guess Windows considered the NPVR scripts personal files and saved them. Even though I reinstalled NPVR it somehow linked to support files in Windows.old When I placed a new version of NextPVR app in the Program Files somehow the association was broken. I don't know enough about operating systems to understand this but time stamps on files I can follow.

So the advice to anyone considering doing a Fresh Start is once it is complete.. go to Windows.Old and delete it after saving anything you need. Then reinstall NPVR. That way when you reinstall NPVR you wont be chasing ghosts like I did for a few days.

it never ceases to amaze me why zap2xml users routinely are making the case for Schedules Direct and still don't learn. We are talking $25/year for something that just works.
