Best way to apply updates

Apologies if this has been asked before, I couldn't find an answer after a cursory search.

What is the recommended method for updating V5 on Windows without losing any current configuration and recording schedules?

Just stop the software, and unzip the new NPVR.zip file on top of your existing files. It wont overwrite any data files (like configuration, recordings etc).

I also stopped the service and killed the background device checker.  I am not sure if that is required, but I did run into a permissions issue (files open or in use errors) on my first attempt when I tried to delete the previous install directory.   Directly unzipping into that directory with a forced over write setting seemed to work just fine
