Option to use alternate viewer

I like the idea of having a viewer in the browser interface for v5, but I'm having a problem with multiple instances of ffmpeg stacking up and choking the CPU when I try to skip through commercials. Each time I click the progress bar to advance or retreat playback it adds an ffmpeg process that doesn't stop running until I kill them. Hopefully this is a known bug in the player and will be fixed, but it would be helpful to have a way to designate an alternate external player. VLC works well and is not affected by skipping ahead or backward when I play the same files with it.

Live TV mode needs a special player. What not use the built in player or Kodi?

Not sure what you are saying... because live tv needs a special player the problem I described can't be fixed for playing back recordings? So is this expected behavior for the built-in player when playing recordings? At any rate, I'm not interested in using Kodi or Plex. I find them to be bloated... overkill for the things I do. I use VLC for most other things, so an option to launch it to view playback would be better if I have to use an external program to watch them.

I may not have been clear in the original post that the problems happens during playback of recordings with the built in viewer. It may happen when viewing live TV as well, but since you can't skip ahead in a live broadcast I haven't noticed it.

VLC is pretty bloated too but that's a side point. Once sub fixes the recording.m3u interface you could use it for http streaming since I assume you don't want to use the file system.

Windows users have the option of using NextPVR.exe that ships with the install. If you're viewing on another another client device, like an apple tv, there is an app available. On linux you could try compiling nlite. These options can play the stream without transcoding.

For recordings, you can use the 'Recording Auto Transcode' option, so that recordings are converted into better format for streaming, ready for quick easy playback in the browser when you play them later.

Right. What I'd like to see is the ability to designate an external player that would open the recording when you press Play. VLC is just an example. The Play button could launch whatever default player is associated with .ts files.

It'll give you the NextPVR.exe style interface on Linux. It does playback without transcoding.

I don't have a formal roadmap I can share. A new type of cross-platform client is high on my priority, as is giving the apple and android apps a revamp. This new client will play native streams.
