Yes, a "normal channel" is just a broadcast channel from the HDHR thru NextPVR. The extra does work if it's played thru the web UI and it did work thru the Vero4k.

Martin, I get it, you're not a fan of the pi but I think this is more a output format problem.

My question is, if you would be so kind as to help, is how would I form the ffmpeg argument so the extras outputs a mpeg2 stream like a normal broadcast tv channel rather than a H264 stream? It seems this may very well be my problem, but as I said, ffmpeg is like a foreign language to me.

h264 is "normal" for broadcast in most of the world even in the US cable card. You will end up needing to transcode for the web app which seems like a step backward

Better to figure out what is wrong with the stream and correcting it for the RPi which no doubt does support h264. I suggest based on your screen shot that you need to add -vf yadif but that is pure guess.

To answer you question you can probably change h264 to mpeg2video in the command line but you might find better choices maybe h/w encoding if you try

ffmpeg -codecs | grep mpeg
