I review each day the logs of my daily backup which includes folder c:\users\public\npvr-data\web\temp. The log showed hundreds of files of the form:

2020-06-13 11:51:00.800 [DEBUG][35] [FFMPEG]: [hls @ 01f6e500] Opening 'C:\Users\Public\NPVR-data\web\temp\Aurora Teagarden Mysteries-18369c7ec4914ca79f4bb4497a45c549.m3u8.tmp' for writing
2020-06-13 11:51:00.809 [DEBUG][35] [FFMPEG]: [hls @ 01f6e500] Opening 'C:\Users\Public\NPVR-data\web\temp\Aurora Teagarden Mysteries-18369c7ec4914ca79f4bb4497a45c54969.ts' for writing

You will see these entries in the attached nrecord.log beginning at 2020-06-13 11:47:55.313.  I was recording Aurora Teagarden Mysteries.S01E02.Real Murders.ts at that time.

Can you tell me if these files are important? I tried to delete the folder but was stopped by the system claiming NextPVRServer still had them open. Huh?

Hope you can help.

When you watch a stream in the web app, it creates these temporarily .ts / .m3u8 files, in the web app temp directory. It's ultimately these files the browser is playing. Yes, there can be a shit load of these files, but it should clean up after itself when it no longer needs the files.

The issue wasn't the recording, you tried to watch the recording in progress in the browser and it failed, so I'm suspecting that NextPVR didn't signal to ffmpeg to stop transcoding and it kept on going. What isn't clear from the logs is why transcoding stopped.

About that... I was testing why Plex wasn't behaving nicely. Seems transcoding was in play when it shouldn't have been. While testing I noticed that the CPU was pegged and ffmpeg was the culprit. I had no idea what started ffmpeg and not knowing any better, I canceled the task. Yeah, I'm like that. The web app started playback because I wanted to see if the current recording was still active, but accidentally clicked the recording from "Recordings" page and not the "Scheduler" page.  So I clicked the stop box in the web app.

Does this make any sense?

Perfect sense killing the ffmpeg task explains the issue. You probably tried to stop playback too early which left the process running. I avoid the recordings screen for many reasons I've transcoded whole shows that I didn't even want. The first (left most) screen is great for status and canceling etc though
