Hello,

Today I decided to update to version 5 in anticipation of TVDB going away.  My intent was to use TVMaze.

I thought I followed update instructions exactly.  I clicked on the link and ended up downloading the setup executable, which I ran.  I never got to the web interface -- something hung up, so I re ran setup.exe.  I never got the web interface, but eventually ended up with a clean installation of NPVR with none of my channels or devices or scheduled recordings.  So, I've kicked off a system restore in Windows 10 to try to get back to version 4, which was otherwise working fine.  Fingers crossed that I can get it back.

I did "forget" to shut down NPVR before I started the process, thinking if that was necessary, the installer would tell me.

Is there a way to update to version 5 that doesn't require reconfiguring everything; i.e., saving all devices, recordings, file locations, etc.?

Thanks for any help.

V5 doesn't touch V4 so the restore wasn't necessary. Your issue was running v4 and v5 together on the same port.

If you had searched the forum you would have found that, depending on tuner type, if you just copied config.xml and npvr.db3 to the C:\Users\Public\NPVR-data and restart the the v5 service it might just work. If you do plan on running them together in the copied config.xml change the port from 8866 to 8867

Also by sure to tick the tv maze option in v5 since sub doesn't enable it by default.

Thank you, Martin.

I did a fair bit of digging here before I decided to update.  I ran across a thread where someone wanted to run both versions simultaneously and there was a discussion of the port issue.  I really don't want to run them both simultaneously. I'm assuming that version 5 is now sufficiently mature that I can just update from version 4, so I followed the instructions in this thread.  The process outlined there does not work as advertised.  Evidently you have to change ports somewhere before you begin.

My system restore completed successfully so I'm back to running (only) version 4.

I'd like to try again to install and use version 5.  Apologies for being slow, but it's still not obvious to me how to do this.  But, picking up on your response, I'll dig around some more and try to figure it out.  It's good to know that v5 is independent of v4, so I won't hose my working system by trying to upgrade.  It also seems like, unless I'm lucky, updating to v5 requires starting over with devices, settings, files, etc.  That's a fair bit of work for me.

Edited to add:  I found the instructions for migrating from v4 to v5 here.

Thank you again.

It's only really this v4 -> v5 upgrade that doesn't do it automatically for you, largely because it's an entirely new application.

If I were you, with a running v4, which I wanted to upgrade to v5, I'd do approximately this:

1. Disable v4. Do this by going into the Services control panel, and stop the 'NextPVR Recording Service', then right click to view it's properties. Set the startup to 'disabled'.
2. Run the NextPVR v5 installer from https://nextpvr.com/NPVRSetup.exe

After this, you should have a functional v5 install, albeit empty and requiring setup. (v4 is still there, but disabled for now, and can be uninstalled later when you're ready)

Since you've installed v5 on Windows, if you're not using IPTV channels, you can probably copy your configuration across. To do this:

1. Go into the Services control panel, and stop the 'NextPVR Service'
2. copy your config.xml and npvr.db3 files from c:\users\public\NPVR\ to c:\users\public\NPVR-data
3. Restart the 'NextPVR Service'.

You absolutely do not need to change ports but you must stop and disable V4 first. You can always reenable it.

The method I explained will work for some tuner types and fail for others. It is not a question of luck. Regardless it is the best way to bring your recordings and preferences.

Thanks sub and Martin.  These instructions seem clear enough for even me to follow them!  Big Grin

A couple items are still just a little bit confusing though.  First, is the web interface going to fire up when I run setup.exe?  It did not the first time I tried it, but I suspect that's because I had not disabled "NextPVR Recording Service".  Do I understand that correctly?

Second, I can see myself getting bogged down setting up v5 -- copying files incorrectly, scanning for channels if necessary, etc. -- and hence I might need to disable v5 and re-enable v4 in case I have, for example, recordings scheduled imminently.  To do that, I assume I 1) Stop (or disable) "NextPVR Service to disable v5 and 2) Start (or enable) "NextPVR Recording Service" to start v4.  This way, only one will be working and I won't have to worry about changing ports.  Again, please correct me if I've got this wrong.

I have 6 Hauppauge tuners installed in my system.  I only watch and record OTA TV.  There are around 60 OTA channels here in Ft. Worth.  Some of them are junk to me so I go through a process of deleting the ones I never use.  I also spend a fair bit of time assigning logos to the channels.  I assume that information is contained in one of the two files I copy over?  (I'm thinking that's incorrect).

Thanks again to both of you for your help and patience.

Right the installer launches the browse page.

I think the Hauppauge tuner would work just with the copy.

If you use Schedules Direct just re-download the channel icon. If you want you can copy all your channel logos and other art if you copy

robocopy c:\users\public\NPVR\media to c:\users\public\NPVR-data\media /s /e
