Slow Interface?

Hey! I've been using GB-PVR for about a month now, and so far I've found it to be a good free alternative to some of the other non-free PVR packages, however the slowness of the user interface has really been freaking me out.

I've noticed that whether I use my Hauppauge remote or the keyboard, navigating the menu is pretty painful. The lag between when I select an option or move up or down in the menu to when I see some feedback on screen varies, but is usually greater than half a second, and sometimes might even be as long as five seconds. I might add that this is when nothing is recording in the background, and GB-PVR is the only application running. Also, I'm sure that GB-PVR isn't simply missing keyboard/remote events, as all keystrokes or remote button presses are eventually processed in the order I issued them.

This interface lag is especially bad in the TV Guide, and It's really frustrating to not know whether the IR receiver registered your remote button press or not, and hitting the button again, only to have all the presses go through in one huge blast, and having strange, unexpected results because of my extra button presses.

Has anyone else ran into this problem? I understand that video capture and playback can be pretty CPU intensive task, but navigating menu's should ALWAYS be fast.

The GDI+ libraries I used dont work well on slow machine, but should work well on anything > 1GHz. On both of my machines (admittedly both faster than yours), my menu and guide navigation is very fast.

I know this probably wont help, but it will hopefully point you in the right direction to resolve your issue with the menus. My system is as follows:
Pentium4 1.5
MSI Socket 423 Mobo
256MB S-DRAM
2 x 40GB HDD
1 x DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo
128MB FX5200
17" Idec & normal 24" TV
Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T (90002)
WinXP Home SP2

Some people will look at the above and laugh, but it does what I want. I also had a problem with the menus being slow (almost to the point of being unusable) when it was using a Geforce 3 TI 64MB. Now, apart from the occasional blip when recording, everything runs nice and smoothly. I have tuned windows by removing/turning off all non-essential services, running a virus scanner in manual not auto mode, turning off the horrible windows theming, etc. Have a hunt around for tips and tricks on optimising windows and you'll be surprised how well a low end system can perform.

I was going to run a Debian/MythTV box, but although I can configure Debian to be a webserver, mailserver &/or fileserver, MythTV had me beating my head against a wall. GB-PVR is a good, solid piece of software.

Are the menus that slow using the keyboard? Maybe it's a remote issue?

Heck, I run on a P3/800 and my menus aren't that slow. I won't say they're instant, but it's less than a second lag, if that, on an MVP, which is supposed to be even slower.
