I haven't been here for a while. Got a HDHomerun Flex 4K tuner so I thought I'd update NextPVR which I hadn't done in years.

Clicked on the Windows link in the Install Information post. It failed on a Windows 10.

That's an error from v4 not the current version. Which installer are you talking about?

You might still be running v4 on top of v7 Go in Windows Services and disable the "NPVR Recording Service"

Well, it left a mess. The bottom line was having to invoke Windows App uninstall, install an archived copy of 4.2.1 (I couldn't find a 4.2.5 that I had been running), reboot, stop recording service, and then I could install the latest. I regret doing so but I won't go into why in this thread. Thank you for pointing to stopping the recording service although I would have thought the install of the new version would have taken action or prompt to do so.

When the v5 upgrade there were lots of posts and wiki pages on upgrading showing how to keep v4 and the current v5 with explanations why it wasn't straightforward. Given that you waited over 5 years to update without even doing any research on the 3 version jump you did blindly I actually don't have a lot of sympathy for you. Generally even commercial packages with have issues skipping so many updates.

That being said we are happy to help you out if you explain any issues you might be having.

Once I got the new version installed, I ran into user interface "issues" I didn't expect. The old installation is trashed. It won't connect to Schedules Direct. Time to move forward with the new version.

- faint gray text on black background is very hard to read. See sample picture and try to read it all.
- dark blue text on black background is very hard to read
- small fonts used - I have to use browse to zoom to 150% to read
- list of channels have every channel checked but no explanation of why
- I thought I could delete a channel from the list by unchecking all but the one to delete and then click the trash can (a typical user interface) but that deleted everything except the one I checked (backwards logic). There's no explanation on the page or warning. Lost a lot of time to rescan devices.
- first attempt to merge channels wiped out all channels but 1. Lost a lot of time to rescan again.
- scanning ATSC tuner for channels didn't give an opportunity to select a Schedules Direct mapping so those all defaulted to DVB ATSC EPG. It took 6 HOURS to select the mappings for each channel. I have 5 HDHomeRun devices with 2 or 4 tuners each attached to antennae pointing in different directions. It creates a very long list of channels. Here's the 6 hours to fix since I was very leery of the merge process.
- no progress indication of channel merging and other potentially lengthy processes

Maybe some of this would not have happened if I could find a decent "user manual". I'll search more.

The thing about browse based apps is yes sometimes you have to zoom a page to get fonts. I am pretty sure fonts in v4 config and even smaller.

I agree that sub should not default ATSC or QAM to OTA but no one is forcing you to do an EPG update before changing to SD.

For sure your system with 5 devices can be complicated if you have any legacy tuners that don't support http playtack. I would have a) used HDHJR mode and b) added all my newer devices and not scanned just copied all the tuners. The legacy device would need to be scanned (again in HDHR mode).

Seeing as you have 928 channels, HDHR mode makes sense

Instead of rescanng you probably could have used umerged (sounds like you selected to merge all)

Using SD make sure you use OTA lineups no if you want OTA automapping to work. For merging you should have used automerge by name or number. Channel merge is too fast to need a progress indicator.

To merge OTA with CableCard/QAM you might need to merge by name, trouble is they don't always match the name. If you have a lot of OTA that could be a pain no doubt, but I don't expect v4 would have been any beter.

Thank you for the reply.

CableCard/QAM are not in the picture (so to speak). All OTA.

Tried scan of tuner 0 and then copy to tuner 1, 2 and 3 (where applicable). Other than on first device, the copy copied from unknown config and didn't copy all channels. It wouldn't make sense (to me) to copy configuration from another device since that one has a different antenna and resulting channel reception. But alas, it copied a random number of channels to the tuner so I had to delete the copied channels and scan the tuner anyway.

Yes I did merge by name. Even that took several minutes on the first merge.

A rescan of a tuner without deleting existing channels leads to duplicate channel entries along with new channels. It is a bit difficult for a human to weed out the duplicates to just get new (or previously missed) channels. I suspect that many of those 928 channels are really duplicates.

I definitely waited until the last scan to run EPG update. At least that knowledge carried over from v4. That brings up the placement of the EPG Update button. It seems odd to be on the "About" page instead of someplace related to channels or guide. V4 it was on the channels page.

I also found that watching ATSC3 program runs fine for a few minutes then it loses audio. Changing channel to something else and back returns the audio for a few more minutes. I'll have to rely on HDHomeRun for live watching.

As long as the major/minor numbers are the same you can still automerge, there might be some regions where that is a problem with some good antenna. NextPVR won't add channels to a device so if you don't want them to merge, remove them from the device before merging.

I agree the rescan from the HDHR shouldn't add duplicates I am not sure if that is only an issue with the HDHR. Ultimately you scan in the Silcondust app and use HDHR mode so scans are fast. But you do have to track changes I don't recall how v4 work. Unless your rescan in the Silicondust app you would have no reason to rescan in NextPVR certainly not on the same day you are installing. The assumption is you Silicondust configuration is good for all your devices.

For ATSC3 the only apps that should have audio are yauiclient and uidroid on non DRM'd channels not sure what you are talking about there.

The About page is actually the main setting page (top right) so yes the left menu item is a bit odd.
