Hi, I have been running npvr 4.2.5 for years. As I've just built a new PC (and probably need a new capture card, see post in hardware forum), thought I would update npvr to v7.0.5.

I could see the EPG, cool, but using arrow keys left, or down, after 3 or 4 clicks, the UI would freeze for a new seconds. Did this repeatedly and I thought maybe my lack of tuner devices is causing a problem.
So I thought I'd look at existing recordings (I've copied over my npvr.db3 from old setup) and the screen was empty, then threw an exception. I cleared it (I should've checked exception details, damn). Then I got another exception. looks like there are permissions problems... have I done something seriously wrong?

Thanks

BTW, I did see some mention in sub's video (in setup overview) of setting up path to working folder (?) which I haven't done yet, and I have multiple storage volumes to set up... could that be the issue?

Is you installation new or did you install to a non standard folder?

Check if these exist

C:\Users\Public\NPVR-data\media\*

2025-08-20 18:33 <DIR> .
2026-03-21 8:15 <DIR> ..
2026-02-16 13:10 <DIR> channels
2026-03-19 21:08 <DIR> shows

The very first (and most important) thing for support is to attach a copy of the .zip log files generated from the web interface Settings page. Click the "Log Files" button. This will flush the log files to disk and include all of the available log files which might be needed. And when attaching it to your support message, leave it as a .zip file and make sure it is under 2MB.

V4 and V5/V6/V7 are basically 2 totally different applications. They use different directories for the program files and for their data directories because that are not compatible/interchangeable. You said that you copied your npvr.db3 file from your v4 installation to your new v7 installation. That process is not officially supported because it doesn't work in all cases. If trying that, you would normally copy both the npvr.db3 file and the config.xml file since some parts of the configuration are in the .db3 file and some are in the config.xml file. Whether or not it will work generally depends upon the types of tuner/capture sources you have since the way they are stored in database has changed.

Is npvr.db3 the only file that you copied? Or did you copy other files/folders in the data directory tree (like the \media\shows folder with the images for all of your recorded shows, etc.)? File/folder access permissions aren't typically a problem on Windows unless network drives are used. But that error message makes me wonder if you copied those other folders and somehow the Windows permissions got messed up.

You also mention that you have "multiple storage volumes" and that you haven't set them up yet. Depending upon your config.xml settings, recordings in your database that point to a drive/file that doesn't exist might get deleted. So if you didn't have those volumes available and tried to start NextPVR, it might have removed all (or many) of your recording entries.

It is also not clear what client you are trying to use. Since v5/v6/v7 are server operating system independent, all of the configuration and "default" client have been moved to a web interface. But on Windows there is still a (different) NextPVR.exe native Windows client as well a whole bunch of other clients for pcs, smart TVs, streaming devices, phones, tablets, etc. When asking for support it is critical to state what client you are using. From you screen capture, I think that you are trying to use the native Windows client application, but I'm not sure.

Again, if you had included the .zip log files, we would be able to determine the answers to many of these questions. That really is the most critical thing needed for support.

Going by that error message, NextPVR doesn't seem to have the permission to write to C:\Users\Public\NPVR-data\media\shows, which it normally would.

So either something like non-standard permissions on your machine, or antivirus software denying it's attempts to write files to that directory.

Yes it was a new install to the default location. Oh and when I mentioned I copied my npvr.db3 from the old setup, yes I copied config.xml too.
I just thought I'd done something weird to get exceptions, didn't think I'd get that with something like a permissions problem.
Will take a look tonight, thanks for all the suggestions

We haven't seen any other reports of the same thing, so I'm leaning towards antivirus software or similar.

Did you run the installer and the go to the web page where sertup now takes place or did you just download the zip file and try and run the client.

Re installing, went to the announcement for 7.0.5.260307 available (7 March)
then followed link for windows and ran NPVRSetup.exe as described.

Sub, thanks, I found the following in windows security history, seems to happen after boot up, and I have not been watching my PC. I do like to keep things relatively secure, but this is a standard windows thing afaik, so I'm surprised others haven't reported this. Anyhoo, maybe just something to keep at the back of the mind.

Ok, so I granted access (above), should all be sorted.
But... now I have tried logging into the web page again - this was working yesterday with the default user and password. Now it isn't!
I have cleared my browser cache, caps lock not on, I have rebooted. Any ideas?

(I did change one win11 setting, under device security I didn't have core isolation on, that was being blocked by some old broadcom BT usb drivers which I have now removed. But I assume this is in no way relevant.)
- Are there days when you want to ask users "have you still got the box that your PC came in..."?

BrettB, I cannot get a .zip of logs as per your above description (because I can't get past login page) but if I know what log file to look for manually and where...
