I have the above mentioned video card and the box says it has full hardware mpeg2 decoding capabilities. Is there anything special I should do with gbpvr in order to take advantage of this? Also is there a recommended mpeg2 decoder software?

I had that w/ the 5500 and never saw how to turn it on. Decided it would probably be best not to turn the vid card into a fireball w/ constant decoding, since most cards run hot these days, anyway. Since it wasn't obvious how to do it, and never heard of anyone crowing about it, I assumed it wasn't worth it, anyway.

I read on another post that the encoder isnt technically a FULL hardware decoder but just assists. The box does say that it is for playing DVDs. Seems kinda like false advertising. I only spent the extra 20 bucks for that card cause of that. Was hoping to replace the pvr-350 with the pvr-150 and that card and get hardware decoding/encoding on my slow processor. Still, the video quality is decent so I cant complain too much Tongue

I found this on the nvidia website for their dvd decoder software.

"High quality MPEG-2 decoder supports any third party software application based upon Microsoft DirectShow®"

The mpeg2 software will offload onto the graphics processor if it supports it...which im guessing mine does....so my question to an admin is...is gbpvr based on directshow?...I dont know that I can afford MCE which is the preffered
program they keep plugging. If it doesnt im not gonna spend the 20 bucks on the decoder software. Thx in advance for the help Smile

Yes, GB-PVR is a directshow application.

As you've read in one of my earlier posts, this card doesnt have a full MPEG2 decoder. Instead it has some special instructions that can assist with the decoding. To use this, you still need to have a directshow software MPEG2 decoder installed. If you're lucky, the MPEG2 decoder you install will be able to utilize the assistance features offered by your video card, and it'll reduce the CPU usage by a few percent. Its never going to be anything like the low CPU usage you get viewing via an XCard or PVR350.

I can't say (even though I use it), but one would assume the nVidia decoder would tap into their cards' mpeg decoders.

This is for all the other users using a nvidia graphics card with the hardware mpeg2 encoding built in. I finnally figured out how to get this to work. You need the nvidia dvd decoder installed and configured to be the default software decoder. I took a small clip from the harddrive and played it on windows media player 10. took a cpu reading and it varied between 40-60% most of the time. Clicked on the decoder icon in the system tray and it brings up the decoder settings. Unchecked the "hardware acceleration" tab and redid the cpu readings. The picture quality dropped and became choppy. Also the cpu load pegged 100% and didnt waver. This setting is on by default and I had noticed previously that the nvidia decoder outperformed the others on my system. Enjoy Smile
