Removing banner

Is there anyway to remove that banner that comes up at the bottom of the screen when watching live tv?

if by banner you mean onscreen display, the information panel, push the "blue" button or ctrl-b. that is if you mean the onscreen display (the blue panel, well blue for the blue skin, that shows you the current position, show name, show description etc).

it should automatically turn itself off after 3 seconds.

If you set it to use minimal OSD, then you'll see it a lot less often.
