SOLVED, The problem was the wireless network

Hey guys, just got myself a MVP and finally got around to installing my PVR150. GBPvr works great and love it. I am having problems with the MVP though.

Athlon 2200 XP Pro w/SP2
1GB DDR
MVP 1000 ver. D3A
Connected via Microsoft MN-740 Wireless gaming adapter.
100gb+160gb

Whenever I try to watch a video it will play the video for about ~10-60 seconds and then display the "Contacting servers..." message. When this happens The MVP seems to loose its connection to the Wireless adapter. The status light on the adapter turns off and the status lights on the back of the MVP near the RJ45 port are off. There seems to be no network communication.

I have gone through the FAQ and a ton of threads here in the forum. I have tried everything that the FAQ Suggests.

Things that work
1. The MVP recieves an IP address from the DHCP Server
2. I am able to connect to both the GBPvr and the Hauppauge server(did this to test). The Hauppauge services have been set to manual now and I am able to connect to the GBPvr server consistently
3. MP3s work fine

Things I have tried
1. Try different dongle.bin files
-i have tried the one that came w/ gbpvr
-dowloaded the latest dongle from hauppauge
-dongle from the application cd that came with MVP
-Beta dongle and few other that I found links to in the forum
2. Disable all possible firewalls.

Couple of other notes
1. Using GBPvr V. 94.13
2. The videos are in MPEG format and play for a few secs and then crash. The longest i have seen it go is one min.
3. Live tv crashes out too with the same syptoms as above.

I haven't had a chance to run a CAT5 cable straight to the router but that is next on my list. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what may be wrong. Also what codecs should have set in my config for GBPvr?

TIA

I think the problems you're having are almost certainly related to wireless, and you'll prove this out when you run a cable. There *are* a few folks running their MVPs over wireless, but from what I've read it takes a lot of tweaking.
P4 3.0 Ghz (hyperthreaded), 1024 MB DDR
XP Pro SP2
20 GB system drive
2x 250 GB data drives, RAID 0
Hauppauge PVR-350
Hauppauge PVR-150MCE
Hauppauge PVR-500
3x Hauppauge MediaMVP

Do you have another computer wireless, if you have one, go to the same spot and check the signal from there. Sometimes is the signal.

Thanks for the responses, I was finally able to find my long cable and tried it. Everything works fine now so the problem was wireless related. I tried all the tweaks I found for wireless and still no Improvement. I think I am going to start searching another way to get this working via wireless.

I'm using an MVP wirelessly but I'm just as surprised it works well as anyone. The MVP's need for a constant uninterrupted stream really makes it sensitive to a flakey wireless connection, and having installed quite a few, I think I'm as much lucky as anything.

I have however found gaming adapters to be less than reliable and perhaps you'll find better luck with true wireless bridge or a router configured as one. I personally used a Motorola WE800G for a couple of years with a lot of success, and I'm now using a Linksys WRT54G configured as a wireless bridge and it works well, but my WAP is only one room away and I still found it helped to boost the wireless signal in the WRT54G using third party firmware (http://www.dd-wrt.com).

You might find success, but don't get your hopes up too high. If wired is an option, it's always best.

Good luck,
Tim

Thats what I figured. I can definetly use wired as an option but it would involve me re-configuring my living room. Not a big deal since I am the only one in my apartment. I think I will see if I get a good deal on a Linksys WRT54G first. I already have one and like it. I saw a couple of posts where people reported success with the wireless bridging.
