Can I retrieve old recordings?

If you're using NTFS f/s then sub stores the date in the metadata. You can access it something like:-

notepad filename.mpg:metadata.xml

and it comes up with XML data including the EPG description and the lot.

Would this allow me to restore the data which tells GBPVR which episodes have been recorded for a show? or (even better) would the MPEGIMPORT program do this automatically. I am not really concerned with the descriptions of the episodes, I just want to make sure GBPVR won't record an episode I already have.

Sorry can't help you there - where I live the EPGs don't supply that sort of info.

I "think" the only thing that you will get from Mpegimport is the what it knows from the file name. Showname, date, time. All the files that I have imported have long since been watched and deleted so I don't know for sure.

I just looked at the list that mpegimport created the last time I imported some recordings. Some had descriptions and EPG info and some didn't. At any rate you run mpegimport to create the list (in xml). Take a look at the list and decide if you want to hit the import button or not.
