replacement shell for winxp

i was watching the screen savers the other day and they mentioned shell replacements for windows, a light weight one. and was thinking well since my htpc only basically runs gbpvr (and norton) i dont need to use explorer.exe its unreliable and resource heavy. i was just wondering if anyone had any experience with these? anyone using a replacement shell? any suggestions, words of wisdoms.

LitePC will disable what you may not need to make your system faster but I don't know what effects this will have on .NET since .NET used API's from all of the expected running services.
BlackViper.com is another site that explains the running services of 2000/XP and what can be disabled for a faster leaner machine.
