Well, I have received my USB-UIRT (which works perfectly), so have been able to try gb-pvr out a bit more fully. I'm having two major problems, which I don't think are connected:

Corrupted program files:
In all the programs I set up to record over the last day or so, the program playback crashes after three or four minutes - whether it is played back via mvp (hauppauge or gb-pvr interfaces) or bsplayer.  The file size shows that the entire program is recorded, and it is sometimes possible to skip over the problem-causing section in Womble Mpeg. It is possible that this could be because my gb-pvr box is also my mail server, and the mail is checked every five minutes - some combination of the mail request/spam-pal/anti-virus combo required for this could be at fault.  I have turned them all off for now to see if that will help, but it isn't reallly a long-term solution.

BSOD:
Strangely enough, I suspect that the gb-pvr isn't too keen on "The Bill" - three out of the four occasions I have tried to record it, the entire win2000 computer has crashed with a BSOD after recording only around 3Mb of the show.  This happened with a quick record of the 7.30 and 8pm episodes on UKTV as well as twice with an attempted season pass of the 3.30/4am episodes.  Strangely enough, an attempt at the 11.30am/12pm episodes recorded OK, but were of course unwatchable after the first couple of minutes due to the previous error.

Any ideas? the machine I am running this on is only an old shuttle computer, with a 1MHz Celeron/256M of RAM, so I suppose I could look at replacing this with a newer machine, but I wouldn't have thought the recordings should have been so fragile.

I will do a few more tests, and will see if I get the same results with recordings scheduled via WinTV etc

cheers,

tieke

Interesting set of problems.

GB-PVR  doesnt really play an active role in the recording, it basically says to the drivers 'ok, start recording to file xyz now. I'll come back later and tell you when to stop'. So based on this, I'd say either there is something wrong with your capture device (or drivers) that is generating "broken" mpeg2 files, or possibly your hard drive is flakey?

I would think that hardware could also copy with checking the email from time to time without causing any problems for the recordings.

Maybe worth checking to see if you have any IRQ being shared between you capture device and other hardware.

Does the NT event log give you any clues as to what is causing your BSODs? Although this also points to some general instability of your machine or hardware.
