A thought I had....Live TV for a GBPVR client

you get "nearly live TV", as soon as you start recording, you just start your client reading the same file.

ie use vlc on the gbpvr server to stream the file to the clients

Doesn't that mean you have to turn on recording all the time - so wouldn't the file size quickly become unmanageable?

....Or on 2nd thoughts do you point the client at some buffer file of fixed size?

Why need a client - why not just stream via the internet like Orb??

sometimes you have extra PC's hanging around and it would be nice to have the GBPVR frontend on them with remote and all. In my case, I have very loud "cheap" hardware in my server. It would be great to build a silent client for the home theater room. I could spend the extra cash on a quiet drive rather than a large one. Also you cannopt schedule recordings or look at the guide using ORB. I know there's always VNC for that, but a lot of people would like the full GBPVR experience on a client PC.

yeah that's the other option is to get that going properly. The only disadvantage (and disadvantages with MVPs is general) is that is using CPU time on the server.

I think others are maybe looking for running a more client/server based architecture. The main advantages is that you will have a bit more CPU power on your client - for running different codecs, upscaling and/or ffdshow processing, something that the MVP doesn't handle well or can't handle at all. And again this takes CPU power on the server.

This is still ticking over in my head, and I'm not sure how much of it would be possible via a plugin - as I said in my first post.

EDIT: Also the "softMVP" was very much a work in progress - there was another one as well, but that author has since left.
