Ok, so this is an odd problem that I cannot seem to figure out. I have an Archos AV500 (video player). It only plays MPEG4s (Avi w/ xvid), and I was hoping to watch some of my tv shows I've recorded on it (while working out, driving, etc.). It comes with a utility that converts MPEGs to MPEG4. However, when I try to convert MPEGs made by GBPVR, I get the error message:

MPEG Import Filter: invalid pack at position 3: marker bit not set; possibly MPEG-2 stream.

It uses a program called VirtualDub, so I tried an updated version of that program, and I receive the same error.

I have also tried using the AVI conversion built into GBPVR, but it tends to go funky. First, the quality tends to be poor. Second, I get random video errors where it is jumpy, the video and audio lose sync, etc. However, the MPEG that it was made from works just fine.

Is this something that only I am having problems with? I have reformatted the computer and reinstalled and run into the same problem, so I don't think its an OS problem. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS: Thanks to all who have done work on GBPVR, it has been a wonderful blessing, and I do greatly appreciate your work.

Sounds like the program simply doesn't like MPEG-2 conversions

"...; Possibly MPEG-2 Stream"

Also, for virtualDub to work with MPEG-2 videos you need the specific mpeg-2 enabled version (not the newest version).

Google will find it Wink

try the ATI Avivo converter..it's lightning fast and makes very nice movies for ipods and psp etc. [note:ati card not needed]
the built-in ffmpeg profiles leave a lot to be desired..adjustments let ffmpeg make very nice output also but requires a bit of ffmpeg knowledge and tweaking..
the ati avivo is very simple and works great tho..

infrared: Thanks, that did it. The mpeg-2 version of virtualdub now allows me to convert the mpeg2s to avi. Thanks so much!

pbs: I am downloading the application right now. I will give it a try and see what I think. I was previously using the one that came with my archos only because it was the only free one I could find.

Is there somewhere I can read up more on video files? I am fairly proficient with computers (currently running windows, mac os x, and ubuntu), but I know little about the way video files work (how they are encoded, file types, metadata, etc.).

Thanks again guys!
