Do you notice the strange way XP lists all folders as read-only? You'll only see this strangeness if you right-click on one folder and choose Properties. Look at the Attributes section, there will always be a light grey chaeckmark next to read-only. In typical Mircosoft nonsense, this special grey probably means something special. If I use Explorer and look at a drive or folder, none of the subfolders show a read-only attribute, "R", in the Attributes column.

I'm sure this Microsoft strangeness is not related to my GB problem. Just coincidental - that's all. I called an IT friend of mine and he said he has always notcied this bug too. He has no explanation as to why...

Yes, it does that for me also. Seems odd, but I think its normal.

I believe I know who the culprit is: Beyond TV(SnapStream). I have that software running on a different networked PC. Apparently BTV changes files that it scans to read-only. I see a lot of poeple complaining about it in Snapstream's forums...

Thanks for assisting sub!

You are so right: It is "normal" for Microsoft to screw things up occasionally Smile

It's not intuitive at all, but I think the light grey checkbox indicates that one or more files in the folder are currently read-only. If you clear the checkbox(and Apply), then you will be prompted whether to recurse subdirs and clear the read-only flag for all files/folders.

Yeah it is odd, MS says that it is so people "don't delete important operating system files".... whatever. If thats true, then why are all the images in my pictures set like that? Big Grin I too have noticed that it doesn't say it when you are in explorer.

Besides, whats the point of it, when you really can delete/modify the file? I'm in IT for a living (Network Admin) and I have even had users ask me about it! How do you explain that one to them? Smile

Microsoft's brilliance is sometimes dulled a bit by a few poor design choices Smile
