I'm pretty green with setting up a HTPC, but I just wanted to share some of my dealings with standby mode.

The problem: The computer would only enter S1 standby mode, leaving all fans going. The computer could not be awakened from standby without plugging in a keyboard and pressing a key.

The hardware: ASUS P4C800E-dlx, ATI 9800, ATI TV Wonder Elite + Remote Wonder+

In order to get the computer to enter S3 standby, I had to go into the options of the BIOS and change the Suspend Mode option from Auto to S3 Only. This indeed caused the computer to enter deep sleep mode, but now I could not wake the machine at all!

Enter +5VSB jumpers-- After fighting this thing for several hours, I found mention of jumpers on the motherboard that change the way power is delivered to the PS/2 ports in deep sleep (S3) mode. Normally, power is only delivered under S1 sleep. In order to allow peripherals to wake the machine, they must have power. After finding this jumper on the motherboard, I could finally wake the machine using the keyboard! But... still problems... normally I do not have a keyboard attached to the system. It sucks having to plug in a keyboard just to wake the machine, not to mention the fact that it is in a different room than the TV! Why can't I use the power button on the remote to wake up?

Well, I found out you can by hacking the registry!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usb
"USBBIOSx"=DWORD:00000000

But, this didn't work! NO! Guess what... more +5VSB jumpers... this time for the USB ports. Finally, after setting the jumper and hacking the registry, the power button wakes the machine. Hurray!

Don't get too excited though, becuase I am now having serious problems... After waking, the WLAN was dead, and the system complained of power surges on the USB hub, failed storage volumes, and disabled the card reader.

I was able to fix the WLAN problem by opening up the device manager, finding my wireless card, clicking the advanced tab, and setting the Power Saving Mode to CAV (constantly awake).

I still had the serious problems with the USB power, and web searches turned up nothing of the problem. On a guess, I read through the manual of my motherboard and guess what... even more +5VSB jumpers. Instead of having one jumper for all ports like the PS/2 jumper, each USB port has it's own jumper! Four different jumpers on the motherboard to allow power to all the USB ports during S3 standby. What a joke. Why the hell aren't these set this way by default?!!?

FINALLY, after hours of dickin around with this thing, standby is finally working, and working pretty damn well.

I still having annoyances... Like after resuming from standby I am presented with a window that says "Are you sure you want to close the foreground window?" (ATI remote software, I guess). And why can't I put the computer into standby using the power button on the remote?

What a mess.

I gave up alltogether with the standby mode and switched to Hibernate mode, it is working great, (knock on wood) I fought with standby before, I didn't want to attack the registry, Hibernate mode shuts off the fans and the system still wakes up for all the scheduled events, I use the Asus P4S800D-X......Smile

Have you changed the function of the power button in the power options on the advanced tab?

It says " When I press my power button" and gives you a drop-down box to select options.
One is sleep mode.

One thing I have noticed with sleep mode & PC's is that some cheaper powersupplies do not handle sleep mode correctly.
They will not fully power-up the system.

one thing I do have trouble with is every now and then windows will switch back to standby mode for no reason, and when I open power options the Hybernate tab is gone, then I have to reboot the system to get it back, I have yet to figure this out......
