Ok, I'm still quite green with this gbpvr so plz bear patience.
I have the Hauppauge 500PVR card with FM radio. I got it a newegg and it only came with drivers.

Under hardware decoder it gives me 3 options:
none, use software
Hauppauge PVR350
Sigma Designs Xcard

Those are my only options. Seeing how i dont see the PVR500 i set it to Sigma and i records fine. Does this seem correct?

Now under video decoder my only option is System Default. Since my card didnt come with any software (mpeg 2 decoders) I installed the K-lite codec pack which has it. How come it doesnt give me to option to set that under video decoder. I still get the playback error basically saying there's no codec, but i can play the mpeg in windows media player.

thanks guys

Ok,
I went to the Hauppauge page and download the video decoder. I didnt realize that they offered it. So not i have under playback InterVideo NonCSS decoder as my video decoder. That seems fine now.

What should my hardware decoder device be?

Since you dont have a hardware decoder, the setting should be set to 'none - use software decoding'.

But doesn't the Hauppauge PVR500 have the hardware decoder built in it?

No, it has a hardware ENcoder. Think video capture (encoding) instead of video playback (decoding).
