Video Archiver on a Client

I'm trying VA on a client machine. I've gone thru and setup all the directories, pretty much a mirror of what's setup on the main machine, pointed the plug-in at the main GBpvr database.

I'm happy to report, it works. I had to use the F11 key several time to get it to finally show everything, but it's working.

The only problem is it's agonizingly slow on the client. 15 seconds or so for each press of a button to go to the next video directory.

Is this something you've tested?
Is there someway to speed it up?
Have i done something wrong in the setup?

Sorry, due o the forum's recent problems I didn't see this. I have used video archiver not as an official gbpvr client but on a second machine with its own local copy of gbpvr accessing the shared content over a wireless LAN. It used to be very slow, which is why I went to the new method of storing all the file info in a local database. That made things fast enough to be useable. Are you sharing the video archive databse between the server and the client? The client should have its own local database. I have a true client machine here at home so I will try to set this up and test it some time in the next few days.

Well, not sure exactly, it does have it's own database, i think. What i did was setup all the directories in the GBpvr config and the settings of VA to point to the video files that were on the main machine. I also, in the VA settings screen, point it to the main GBpvr database on the main machine.

I think the answer to your question is yes, i'm sharing the video archive database between the two machines.

That was my call. My reasoning was if i didn't, how would one copy of VA know what the other had watched, or deleted etc.

Each client can have its own VA database. I don't know if GBPVR will generate events to let the clinet know that another machine has wacthed a file. They will however get events from windows to tell it you have deleted something. If your clients only run now and again then they will get out of sync and you will need to press F11 to pick up deleted or added files (and you will stay out of sync with respect to watched files).

That kind of what i thought, while the main machine runs all the time the client is only occasionally. I figured for the client server application it would be better if everything were able to pull from the same info, so you don't get out of sync.

It's a feature i think would be most useful in the server/client atmosphere we're starting in GBpvr. I'd also like to the the weather plug in on a client pulling from the data that's already on the server instead of downloading it again.

I agree. We are going to get into a mess if we don't have a way for the PC Client to share info on the server. Already I am realizing the maintenance issue of plugins having to be the same on the client and the server as they share the same config file on the server, right?

For instance, I installed the latest VideoArchive on the server and the client, but reasoned I wouldn't have to do any configuring on the client as it is pointing to the config.xml on the server. But I don't see the plugins on the client. What do I need to do for them to be seen?

P.S.
I REALLY like how the VideoArchive installs. Would that all plugins were installed so tidy and straightforward.

I have only been using VA for a couple of weeks and only just realised when i go to look at archived files on a client pc it shows the program to be played but wont play it
(i can play it from the video folder pointed at the right hard drive on the clientpc)
is there a setting or do i need to have VA installed on both server & client?

i had this happen too. I ended up being permissions, not so much of me logging on to other machines but of GBpvr and it's recording service having the proper permission. All my machines now have an administrator, GBPVR, same username and password for all and i've been fine ever since.
