recording size change

hey, last week my recordings were using about 1.75gb /hr of video. Now this week they are using about 2.75gb /hr show... the only things i changed on my system were the installation of new divx codecs & window media player 11 beta 2 (from beta 1) ... i haven't changed any setups in the config. any ideas on how to get this back to normal??? im planning on getting an external hard drive to have all the shows i got that i will keep any ideas on a good model???? and is it ok to record directly to the External drive or should i record to my internal drive & transfer them over after?

any help would be greatly appreciated!!

2GB RAM
250 GB 7200 RPM HDD
256 MB Nvidia GeForce 7800GTX

Hauppauge USB PVR 2, default medium settings, shaw cable, GBPVR 98.08?? (new one few weeks ago)

I'm not sure if it will help or not, but you could try editing direct.ini, and in the [Hauppauge WinTV PVR2 USB2] section set INIT_MODE=IVAC
