Auto aspect in VMR9

When I play mpegs or live tv using VMR9 it always starts as widescreen even though it's set to auto. F7'ing through the aspect ratios back to auto temporarily sorts it out but only until another file is played or live tv is restarted. Auto mode works perfectly for everything but VMR9. Is there a workaround?

The auto aspect ratio stuff only works if you've explicitly set your decoder to something other than 'system default'. Could this be your problem?

I'm using the intervideo decoders and the auto aspect works in Overlay, VMR7 and Custom modes, just not VMR9.

I've just tried some other decoders:
DScaler works
Gabest works
MainConcept works
Cyberlink doesn't. It also squashes (but works in overlay, vmr7, vmr9custom)

Am I right in thinking that the three that work don't utilise hardware acceleration while the two that don't work properly do?

BTW, I'm using a Radeon 9600
