This is the well known as nvidia aspect ratio bug. There is a couple of threads about here and on the nvidia forums: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=15184&st=0

It affects other apps as well.

sub - I don't know if this helps or makes a difference, but I gave PureVideo a try.

When I first launch Live TV, the display is *too* horizontally compressed. If I hit F7 once (change to "Auto" aspect ratio setting) everything looks perfect. Picture is centered and 4:3 aspect ratio looks correct. If I continue hitting F7, I can get back to "Auto" but it looks way different, and I can't get back to the way that "Auto" looks that first time I come to it. "Pillar Box" aspect ratio still shows the off center, slightly widened aspect ratio display from my earlier screenie.

I had other issues with PureVideo though (picture on VMR9/Live TV looks really "jumpy" like it's dropping frames at a pretty regular rate) and I'm not sure if there's any reason why I'd want to use it with my specific video hardware (GF4 Ti4600) so I switched back to my ancient Intervideo codec. Thought you might like to know, w.r.t. the inconsistency in the "Auto" aspect ratio.

I have noticed the tie that binds all the issues is the use of Nvidia cards. Nvidia cards currently are incredibly wonky when outputting to hidef resolutions while using vmr9. If you use vmr9, chances are you will end up with odd offsets or the aspect ratio bug (using only 1/4 of the screen and having graphic jibberish in the rest). The fix on this is using the vmr9 custom. That should fix any issue with the aspect ratio. Changing to Overlay will also fix it.

However, the other issue with Nvidia in vmr9 at the hidef resolutions you will face is tearing. Some will experience it worse than others. The only solution for this really is the use of the overlay renderer.

Just to let everyone know how my problem turned out:

I am now using ffdshow decoders and I can better control the aspect ratio. I can have a constant 4:3 image. Thank you for the help.
