Hello,

This is probably a silly question, but I was wondering if GB-PVR records DVB broadcasts exactly as transmitted (ie. does it record the transmitted MPEG signal straight to disk), or does it encode the video again?

under version 0.99.5 you have the option to record as TS Mux (Transport Stream Mux, raw data of only one program stream), otherwise you have to select a multiplexer like MS-DVR or Cyberlink. there is no additional encoding involved, mpeg stream is only multiplexed in file container (sort of Wink)

Ah, right, okay. I'd assumed that because a multiplexer (such as Cyberlink) was needed, the broadcast was being encoded again, but obviously not (although I'm intrigued what you mean by 'sort of'!)

there is no need to reencode it again (if you want it smaller, that's another story) as a TS allready contains the encoded video data in the same format as a PS. didn't know how much of the basics you knew about video file containers Wink
'sort of ': i guess in GBPVR the PS is basically stripped of additional data (i.e. EPG) but that's details only sub could give a good answer to

If you are using an mpeg2 muxer (such as Cyberlink), the process is a demux/remux process.

In short, the output of the capture source is first demultiplexed into its component parts. The video and audio streams at this stage appear separately and, ultimately, have to be recombined before writing to the recording file. This is where the mpeg2 multiplexer is needed - it takes the AV components, re-multiplexes them and passes them to a file writer.

If you use dvr-ms as your preferred recording format then the Stream Buffer Sink filter provides a combination of multiplexing and file writing without the need for a third-part muxer.

Cheers,
Brian
