I just started using the No-Scripts extension for Firefox, and I noticed that whenever I go to the forums here at gbpvr.com, some kind of script(s) from google-analytics.com try to run.

Not allowing them to run doesn't seem to effect the way the web pages display, so I was wondering what the script(s) do? Do we need to let them run for sub to get credits for the ads?

google-analytics.com helps me collect stats on where people come from, the pages that get accesses most often etc.

Doesn't it also allow them to target ads regionally by knowing where we are in the world?

The Google Ad banner almost always shows me UK-related adverts with prices in GBP - I'm sure it does the same thing for people in other parts of the world (i.e., local interest, local prices etc).

Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

Cheers,
Brian

No, thats Google AdSense, which an indepedent google thing, in a different part of the web page.

There isnt supposed to be any correlation between the two, but you never know...

As I've revisited my usual sites, the No-Scripts extension is showing that almost all of them are using scripts from google-analytics.com. I just hope no one ever figures out how to hack them, or everyone will be screwed

Google targets you geographically with adsense based on your IP address. It's a matter of public record where your IP places you geographically and is nothing to be concerned over privacy-wise.

What google-analytics does is collect a very generic demographic in direct relation to the site you are working with (in this case the gbpvr website) and presents that information graphically for sub, and his bosses (I assume) to see at regular intervals.

It's an easy way to get a quick look at who is using gbpvr in terms of geography, and how often they use the forums.

Nothing to be concerned about Smile

The script is actually so that google-analytics can grab a little more information about you that your browser offers to every webserver you visit.

Which is the version of browser you're using and your operating system/version - also what page referred you.
