This is somewhat off-topic but still an issue with those of us that have built HTPCs with analog cards. I've currently built an HTPC with a PVR-150 and an HVR-1600 so that I can still get analog cable but also pull in OTA HDTV. So what will happen as we approach 2009 here in the US? Will the cable companies push out a digital signal that we can use other than QAM? What type of cards will I be able to use with my HTPC and digital cable in the future? Will the cable companies force us to rent a box?

I'm fairly sure the end of analog legislation only relates to over the air broadcasts. Analog cable could continue on for many years.

You can use devices like the HDHomeRun or OnAir GT for receiving unencrypted digital cable channels. I'm sure there will be more of these types of devices in the near future.

When in comes to receiving premium digital cable channels (normally encypted), the options will either be using a digital cable box connected to analog card, or using one of the future cablecard devices (these are still to materialize).

As I said though - cable networks arent required to change anything any time soon.

What sub says is correct; unless you are getting your tv solely as OTA analogue, there really is nothing to worry about for some time.
